Rick's Pony
When my oldest son went to college,my middle one inherited this 1966, six cylinder,automatic transmission Mustang. When his turn came to go to college,he needed a more practical form of transportation, so he got his Honda and I kept the Mustang. Now that I had a toy to play with I started to change things.

First the whole suspension front and rear were rebuilt. The Upper arms were dropped one inch (ala Shelby),a 1 1/8 inch; sway bar, Poly bushings and gas shocks were used. I got rid of the drum brakes in the front and replaced them with a set of Granada 11 inch;
disks. Now I had 5 lugs in the front and four in the rear. So, I replaced the rear axle with an 8 inch from a '67 Mustang and bigger 10 inch;rear drum brakes. Since I had better brakes all around I decided to add a dual master cylinder from a '67 and mounted it on a '66 brake booster, whose mounting bracket and pedal geometry I modified to fit .

In the rear I decided on heavy duty leaf springs and load leveler shocks with a coil spring. I mounted 15 inch; Torque Thrust II wheels and 205-15-60 tires. As a final touch I installed a manual rack and pinion set up from
TCP. As far as the engine is concerned I haven't really started to modify it in any major way. I put in a Pertronix Ignitor and High Voltage coil, 8mm spark plug wires,Bosch Platinum plugs and a home made Ram air system.

To upgrade the cooling system, I went to a heavy duty 3 core radiator, a 16 inch; front mounted pusher electric fan and a small cooling radiator for the automatic transmission. This small radiator is mounted in between the radiator and the engine. This keeps up very nicely with even the hottest of weather in Southern California.

I recently purchased a
250-2v head with removable alloy intake manifold and adapter for a 2bbl Holley carburator from a very nice chap in Perth, Australia. This should allow me to go to better carburation and better breathing. I really do not want a stoplight rocket, just good acceleration and passing power coupled with the excellent handling and stopping characteristics that the car now has.I will update this page as changes take place. I truly believe that the pleasure I get from planning and bringing to fruition every change has been a tremendously rewarding experience.

I already have someone lined up to take over the car in a few years. Just so I don't get any big ideas about keeping it. Take a look at the future
driver
The interior was in nice shape before the project began. The steering wheel is my addition.
Nice profile don't you think?
The bigger wheels and lower profile tires as well as the lowered stance makes the car look right.
Notice the home made fresh air intake. Laugh if you will but it works!
