A strip of thin cotton 1x8ins is folded centred and glued to the spine and allowed to dry. The purpose is to reinforce the back of the fold at the spine where the sheets are to be sown together.

A procedure known as stab and sew will required a awl to pierce three  holes at  the centre of the fold
These three marks are drilled by the awl and should be marked A B C, B being the centre. Using a threaded needle, enter from the back of the spine through B, leaving an inch of excess then to out from A to in C then through B to be tied off at the back of the spine. The sections are secure.
