FEBRUARY 9th, 2008 RESULTS
On a day of below zero wind chills and bitter cold temperatures 44 drivers put on a show that produced three firsts in each of the three regular racing classes. Despite the cold weather and for a second week in a row cars and fans surrounded the track to watch the fifth week of car ice racing events unfold.
Mike Schnider and Scott Miller shared the front row in the FWD feature with Miller looking for a fifth win and keep his streak alive. Schnider on the other hand had different ideas after pairing his heat wins. Schnider bolted to the lead in the fifteen lap feature and lead from wire to wire, lapping up to the fourth place car. Schniders win puts a halt too Millers win streak, making him the first driver, other than Miller, too claim a win in the class.
With Schnider out front, that left Miller and Jesse Tripp doing battled for second. Miller Miller made a late race pass and finished runner up ahead of Tripp. Brooke Fairbanks hung with the dueling pair but settled for fourth, while the lapped car of Mark Lawrence finished fifth.
Don Cook lead the first lap of the 6/8 Full Size feature with Curt Myers taking the lead away on lap two. One more lead change on lap four would see the first repeat winner in the Full Size class as Jerrod Amundson would lead the remainder of the race. Cook pressured Amundson lap after lap but was unable too regain the top spot and finished runner up. Jim Cimfl finished a strong third. Myers, filling in for Steve Hallquist, recovered from a mid race accident, passing Jeff Brueggen on the last lap to round out the top five. Amundson and Cook each had a heat win, with Myers taking the other two.
Karen Koltunski was looking for her third feature win in the COMP4 class after a pair of heat wins. She would share the feature front row with Troy Gross. Gross also paired his heat wins. Koltunski looked as if she would accomplish the triple after jumping too an early lead but on the fifth lap Brent Procknow, filling the vacated seat of Myers, would have different ideas. Koltunski continued to put the heat on Procknow but would run short on laps as Procknow would pick up the trophy in his first ever ice race in Rice Lake. With the two top spots pulling away from the field, Troy Holder used the inside groove to his advantage with Tadd Davis glued on his bumper. Davis would show a fender to Holders outside a couple times but the inside lane provided too much traction for Davis. Holder finished third ahead of Davis with Al Koltunski hanging with the pair and finishing fifth.
Sheila Cook lead the field of three Powder Puff drivers every lap in both the heat and feature, with Jill Amundson second and Deb Cimfl third.
