Lewis

and other Hebridean islands

The Isle of Lewis ( the name comes from the gaelic Leodhas meaning marshy) is part of the most northerly island in Outer Hebrides. The southern part of the island is called Harris. With an area of 600 square miles , Lewis has a population of around 21,400.

The following photos are of standing stones at Callanish. This unusual monument consists of 13 standing stones around one central monolith. In addition there are avenues of stones - a double row to the north and single rows to east and west.

The intention of these sites remain mysterious , but suggestions include that they had some astronomical significance.

The stones are made of Lewisian gneiss. This gives the stones an unusual stripey quality in shades of grey and pink.

Barra

Barra ...with the exception of Vatersay, the most southerly inhabited island of the Outer Hebrides. Around 1500 people live on this small island, about 8 miles long and 5 miles wide. A circular road covers most of the island...about 12 miles long.

Arriving on Barra by ferry from Ullapool. After a stormy crossing, dry land can be a welcome sight !The main village Castlebay lies just beyond the Kisimul Castle, ancient stronghold of the MacNeils of Barra.

Vatersay, even smaller than Barra, with a population of around 70. In 1990 a causeway was built linking Vatersay to Barra. Maybe the population will go up now ! Vatersay is worth visiting for the two wonderful long sandy beaches.
