This is the Whirlpool galaxy (M51). A supernova has just appeared and I've marked it in the image. The first one I have ever witnessed! This really shows how a telescope can act as a time machine. You are looking at a star exploding 37 million years ago ! Image notes : Taken with the Bradford Robotic Telescope. (C14, Paramount ME and Fingerlakes MaxCam CCD). 6 luminance @ 180sec, 4 each of R G B @ 180sec acquired between 23:11 Thu. 30th June and 23:59 Sat. 2nd July. Frames registered and aligned in IRIS. DDP applied and LRGB combination in Stellar Magic. Artificial flat generated by PixInsight. Levels adjusted in The Gimp. Unsharp mask and final tidying up in PaintShopPro5. |
