William M. McCauley of 501 Washington St., Newell, a retired motorman for the Globe Brick Co., died Thursday at 5 pm at his home after a lingering illness. He was 88.Firemen were called to the home to administer oxygen.
A native of Marietta, he was born March 29, 1877, to the late Alexander McCauley and Martha Hoyt McCauley. He resided in the area for about 60 years. He served as a justice of the peace in the Grant District from 1948 to 1952 and also was a superintendent for 15 years at the former American Sheet and Tin Plate Co. in Wellsville. He retired in 1950. He was a member of the Congo Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Cannabelle French McCauley on February 19, 1953. He is survived by two sons, Carl C. McCauley of Little Rock, Ark., and Roy A. McCauley of Newell; four daughters, Mrs. Herman (Wilma) Burch, Mrs. Charles (Erma) Baker, Mrs Joseph (Blanche) Fuller and Mrs. Madelon Cosgrove, all of Newell; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Stephens of Congo; five brothers, Foster A. McCauley and George B. McCauley, both of Rison, Maryland, Samuel T. McCauley of Wellsville, Charles W. McCauley and Albert McCauley, both of Parkersburg, WV; eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 pm at the Congo church of the Nazarene by the Rev. Walter Speece. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, Wellsville.

John W. McCauley, 62, formerly of Wellsville, died Wednesday night in his home at Dellslow, West Virginia following a brief illness.
Mr. McCauley was employed in the Wellsville works of the American Sheet and Tin Plate Co., before going to Dellslow.
He is survived by his widow, one son, Blaine McCauley in the navy in the Pacific; one daughter, Mrs. Julia Sythard at home; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Stephens of Congo; seven brothers, George B. McCauley of Washington, Samuel McCauley of Wellsville, Charles McCauley of New Brighton, Pennsylvania., William McCauley of Newell, Albert McCauley of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Foster McCauley of Cleveland, and Everett McCauley of Canton; a step-son, Louis Littleton at home, and two step-daughters, Alice Littleton at home, and Ella Littleton of Washington.
The body was brought today to the home of his brother, William McCauley, 404 Grant St. Newell, for funeral services Saturday at 2:30 p. m. by Rev. Chester Acton, pastor of the Congo Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Wellsville.
Friends may call tonight at the McCauley home in Newell.

Mrs. Margaret Stephens, 91, of the Congo Rd., Newell, was pronounced dead on arrival Thursday at 6:50 pm at City Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack at home.
Mrs. Stephens was born July 16, 1887 in Wilding, WV, a daughter of Alexander McCauley and Martha Hoyt McCauley.
She had resided in the Congo-Newell area since the age of 16 and was retired from the Homer Laughlin China Company.
Mrs. Stephens was an honorary member of the IBPAW and a charter member of the Congo Church of the Nazarene.
Her husband, William Gillespie Stephens, died in 1965.
Survivors include seven daughters, Mrs. Helen Conway, with whom she resided, Mrs. Robert (Olive) Norris of Congo, Mrs. Floyd (Ruth) Woods and Mrs. Earl (Martha) Daugherty, both of Newell, Mrs. Melvin (Annabelle) Gentry of Worthington, Ohio, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Wise of Midland, Michigan, and Mrs. Ralph (Roxie) Metz of Ravenswood, WV., ; a son, Francis E. Stephens of Phoenix, AZ; two brothers, George McCauley of Oxen Hill, Maryland and Charles McCauley of New Brighton, PA., 32 grand-children, 55 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 1:30 pm from the Dawson Funeral Home by the Rev. Arnett Baker, former pastor. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, Wellsville.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday afternoon and night.
