Curriculum Standards

Upon completion of this project students will be able to understand not only the subject matter, but also the concepts and importance of individual and group work. Within the dynamic of the group, ideally, each participant should be responsible for a piece of the puzzle, and in the end mesh their piece with other group members to come to a logical conclusion. The give and take of a cooperative project will further develop the communication skills, demonstrate the importance of teamwork, organization of data, and expose the students to other methods of problem solving, that is necessary in almost any endeavor they choose to undertake in the future.
As far as scholastic goals are concerned, at the end of the project the students should know the following;

  1. Students should be familiar with and understand the scale model of geologic time (St 6 KI 3),
  2. Students should be familiar with and understand that the Earth’s history and life-forms are at least partially preserved in the rock record. (St 4 KI 1.2i),
  3. Students should be familiar with and understand that geologic history can be reconstructed by observing sequences of rock types and fossils to correlate bedrock at various locations (St 4 1.2j).
