A Journey Through Time

Introduction

This lesson was developed in the course Teaching with WebQuests , a course offered by the Teacher Education Institute. Incorporating technology and education in today’s environment is almost mandatory due to the explosive nature of discoveries within the scientific community. Textbooks become outdated before they reach their audiences, leaving electronic resources the most current method of disseminating information. Utilizing the concept of WebQuests in the classroom brings the latest in information to the student and presents it in a manner conducive to student involvement.
The earth science curriculum, although very interesting to me, is not usually exciting to students, especially the subject of geologic time. Students often tell me it is a boring topic and does not offer too many opportunities for a hands on activities.

They also feel the concepts behind determining the age of a rock is irrelevant, not pertaining to anything that they think important in their lives or futures. My goal with this WebQuest, and with integrating technology into my lesson plans, is to inspire student interest in what they thought to be mundane and hopefully motivate them to want to understand geologic time a little better. I feel that an educator’s job is more than teaching facts and concepts, but also, demonstrating to the students that learning can be fun as well.

Like the old proverb says, ‘If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for today, but if you teach a man to fish, you will feed him for a lifetime.’. Our job is to teach our students to ‘fish’ for knowledge at all times. Today’s technology provides us with an ever growing resource that we should take advantage of every day in our classrooms.
