Criterium del Valls - 24th of July 2004

The second rally for Ren and Jordi would be one of mixed emotions. In any case, a lot was learned from this weekend.

The rally started late afternoon, to finish around midnight. Unlike the previous rally, all stages were known, as pacenotes could be made two weekends before. A large field of racecars joined in Sant Feliu de Codines.

SS A1, LEstany:
This very fast and long stage would prove to be a difficult one. Brake balance was changed before the rally, which caused some early stage near escapes. From the start of the stage the gearbox was also causing huge difficulties, making it an impossible task to be really competitive. The results were a 20th overall time, and 5th in the class.

SS B1, St Miquel del Fai:
This stage featured many fast turns, without many large braking zones. That proved to be of some help, as the gearbox problems were not that dominant now. A very good stage for Ren and Jordi, resulting in a 11th overall time, with a 2nd position in the class at just a second behind the class winner!

SS A2, LEstany:
Second try, and a slightly better result than in the first. Although gearbox troubles were worsening, a better pace could be kept. Where time was lost in the first stage, now no mistakes were made. With a 13th position overall and a 3rd in the class, they could be satisfied.

SS C1, Granera:
The last stage of the day would be driven in full darkness. That was new to both men, and it would be a difficult stage. Although Ren felt completely comfortable with driving in the dark, the stage time was slightly worse than expected. It was good for a 15th overall position and 5th in the class.

Having finished all stages, a virtual 3rd class result was reached. Overall position would have been 11th. Not bad at all for a rally with a problematic car. But luck didnt seem to be on their side today, as because of some unfortunate trouble, the service area could not be left on time. That resulted in a one minute penalty: they dropped back to 22nd overall, and 6th in the class. All in all, a day to be learned from!
