Fever
- See cold if you have a cold or cold-like symptoms. Fevers are the result of your body fighting infection (whether viral or bacterial), so it could be a symptom of flu or another type of infection. See your doctor for a proper diagnosis.
- Give acetaminophen (Tylenol, etc) or ibuprofen (Advil, etc) to bring fever down, and cover up very warmly. Place wet compresses on forehead to cool.
Give lots of just-hot water to drink, warm water mixed with jello, and soft foods.
- Most important: plenty of sleep and rest. Avoid too much tv and reading. The eyes should rest as well.
- For children with high fevers (101-103), give one dose of children's acetaminophen or children's ibuprofen. If temperature is higher, see or call a doctor, or make sure the child has not had any medication 6 hours before bedtime, and when it's time for bed, give one dose of children's ibuprofen and one dose of children's acetaminophen. Together, the medicines should work for most of the night. Ask your doctor about proper dosage for your child.
- For children, give plenty of fluids (use a cool straw for fun).
- High temperature in a baby can be a sign of something serious. Any infant 4 months or younger with a fever of 100.5 or higher should be seen by a doctor. Look out for changes in behavior (being tired or uncomfortable) and see the doctor.
- General fever tips: get lots of rest, drink warm liquids, and add a little pepper and/or ginger to them. You can also boil fennel in water and drink this water warm or lukewarm.
