Choking
- If someone is choking, check if they are coughing. If coughing, they should get it out themselves. If they are not able to, provide a smart slap on the middle of the back to help bring the object upward.
- If they cannot cough, they cannot breathe. Ask if they are choking - if they place hands to throat and cannot reply though they are trying, they are truly choking. In this case, perform the Heimlich maneuver. Clasp hands just below their ribcage from behind. Thrust in the center of that area just below ribcage, pushing inward and upward, until food comes out. If it comes up but not entirely out, you may have to fish it out with a finger.
- If YOU are choking and alone, you may perform the Heimlich on yourself by pressing with clasped hands in front, or lean on the back of a chair to provide the thrust.
