Allergies
- to prevent allergies: take 1g vitamin C daily
- to prevent allergies: eat locally grown honey, 2 tbsp a day
- Identify the cause - is it food, dust, pollen? Avoid the cause.
- Natural ayurvedic medicines like Biochemica 2 may help treat allergies.
- Avoid taking cold medicines for allergies - they may work in combination with antihistamines, but not alone. Drugs like Sudafed may be difficult on those with heart problems.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Children should avoid whole wheat, which is thought to hasten the onset of allergies. Instead, try other whole grains.
- When sleeping, sleep with head raised above your body - this helps prevent allergies from your pillows, etc. Also, do not cover your head when sleeping.
- If you sneeze only once, it is probably a perfume sneeze or a sneeze caused by a particular trigger (pepper, a particular odor, etc). Perfumes also cause skin rashes. Notice what was near you and avoid the stimulus.
- For diaper rash, keep baby out of the diaper and in open air as much as possible to clear up the rash. Baby wipes may also further irritate so use cottom balls and warm water to gently clean diaper-area skin (avoid soap also, which can be irritating as well). Also use an antifungal cream (see below).
- Some rashes and diaper rashes are yeast-based infections, often indicated by rough, red, dry skin with raised bumps, so use an antifungal cream like Lotrimin.
- Pet and dander allergies: The best way to combat them is to try to keep
the area around you pet-hair free. If that means trying to make a cat more
of an outdoors cat, it may have to be done. Keep areas around you free of
pet hair and make sure you wash your hands and clothes when you or they
touch the pet. Also make sure the cat or dog is kept clean with baths and no
fleas! To try to control it long-term, spend just a little time around the pet
each day (very little - five minutes) and at a distance. Very slowly and
with time, some people develop immunity to the pet hairs and fibers.
The only sure-fire permanent way to get rid of your cat allergies is to
get allergy shots. You can ask your doctor about them or see an allergy
specialist. Some other ideas? Take an antihistamine before you go near the cat. This
is a rough thing to have to do on a regular basis but if you have other
allergies as well and need to take them anyway, it might be an option for
you. Avoid the drowsy kind - there are several new non-drowsy
antihistamines. In any case, the more natural methods are better for you
in the long-term.
