Tomorrow's Fashion
The year is 2105. Adequate clothing is no longer an issue. It is not the two-piece colored spandex of Star Trek, nor the foil jumpsuits of science fiction. Clothing is free and available to all who care to wear it.
A few do not wear clothing. They function as members of society, as they must. But most do wear it, because the earth is a place of hazards, environmental and otherwise, and we all need protection.
Clothing is simple and functional. It is made from salvaged cloth and renewable resources. Oil and synthetics are abhorred, so only biodegradable materials are used. All the clothes, when mixed with a special bacteria, break down into nothing in days.
Women and men wear what they like. There are skirts that wrap, tops that snap together, collars and sleeves. Everything fastens magically with a special built-in static cling. The length and fit of your clothing is also a part of the material, which though made of natural fibers, molds to a pre-determined shape that just suits your body.
But where is fashion? Where is the dramatic fantasy of the future? Where are the gold lamé jumpsuits and wing collars? Where are the jet-boots and earrings that dangle to the waist?
Oh they exist.
They are in the museums. They are the high art of fashion. They are worn by models who are artist's muses. They are in museums of fashion, where they parade by, as admired as The Birth of Venus.
And they are accessible. For day to day, the simple workclothes of the commoner. But ask, and you may have your dress made of spider silk to wear to a party, and carry it home with you, and have it return to the soil like your other clothes, or donate it to a friend or the museum for posterity. Commission a fashion artiste to make your Amazon molded rubber catsuit. Call upon a friend to clothe you in a suit of swirling purple dry ice.
The future is a world of fantasy, made possible by your dreams. Where will your fashion sense call you? What will you wear in the year 2105? What will you wear twenty years from now?
