City Style
OR What to wear to different destinations.
I'm always trying to figure out what to wear to different places. You
really only know if you've been there - otherwise how can you tell what to
wear in Chicago, or New York, or LA?
Of course, you have to dress for the weather (forget the shorts if it's
winter), and what you're doing (never
wear a miniskirt hiking), but aside from that, how do you know what to
wear?
Well, here's a (not so) definitive guide to several popular destinations
in the US.
Boston
Beantown natives are conservative. They would never be caught dead in neon
green or hot pink. But they daringly wear flowery prints from time to
time, and you may catch some knee-high boots.
Chicago
Fashionable as they are, natives of Chicago are most comfortable in their
casual best. Think jeans, khakis, shorts. But don't mistake them for
fashion-dummies - they'll be in their finest for evenings out and
anywhere special. Don't forget something to cover up from the wind!
New York
You can't outdo a New Yorker when it comes to fashion, but you can try
without trying too hard. Wear solid, fashionable staples like black
slacks in dark colors. A splash of red will do you some good. Learn to
walk in heels, or bring sensible shoes. Don't forget the designer bag.
Las Vegas
Vegas is a chance to go wild. But dress like you belong at the bar, not on
it by bringing skirts down closer to the knee. Go crazy with sleeveless,
graphic prints. An evening out will require something modestly sequined or
shiny.
Los Angeles
It's warm and sunny any time of year, so bring your beachwear and
coverups. Shorts and little skirts will really show off a tan. If you
don't have one, don't forget your bronzer, and bring some light linen
pants. LA's sunny side also makes for a good place to wear tanks and nice
nightwear.
San Francisco
Hippie-town's year-round cool weather is good for long flowy dresses and
casual, comfortable tunics. Wear flowers and bold prints, but avoid the
tie-dye. Even SF is sick of it.
