Fashion fixer: Emergency!

The Politics of Fashion

How to wear a t-shirt #11

Fashion Fixer: Emergency!
On the go and in a fashion fix? Our fashion fixer has just the ticket. Here are some simple supplies that will help you get out of trouble fast and save your clothes in a jiffy!

Q: I've just put on deodorant and now I have ugly white streaks on my dark clothes! Whatever shall I do?
A: Fret not, just reach for a baby wipe. Get a nice moist one, and it will help rub out that white stain.

Q: I was out dancing when I heard a rip, and there went my pantyhose! It continues to run! How can I stop it?
A: When the run strikes, think quick and reach for your nailpolish. A dab of clear nailpolish (or colored, if you must) will prevent the run from getting bigger. A little hairspray could do the trick if you don't have nailpolish on you.

Q: I was laughing and having a great time until my date spilled wine on my impeccable white shirt. Will it ever come out?
A: Be a good sport and dab at it with club soda. If it's red, soak in salt water before you wash. Next time, carry a stain wipe with you, or at least baby wipes.

Q: My friend bent over to pick up his keys when rrrip - everyone saw his underpants! I'm embarrassed to be seen with him, but more worried FOR him!
A: Keep a safety pin handy, and you can always pin it back up. If you have more time, a mini sewing kit will help. Tell your friend to wear looser pants next time.

Q: I have a darling little skirt, the perfect length. That is, until the hem started falling. Now it's a mess.
A: Don't worry, a little hem tape will hold it in place. If you're stuck in another place, use a safety pin or even just ordinary tape or a bobby pin to hold it up.

Q: I'm in dreadful fear of my low strapless dress exposing me! How can I be sure it passes the dancing, jumping test?
A: After you've tested it out at home, secure it to yourself or your bra with hem tape. Then party away!

Q: The button fell off my shirt while I was eating! I don't have an extra handy, and no sewing implements!
A: Once again, the safety pin and the hem tape will help you out. Use them both to be doubly sure the shirt stays in place.

Q: It rained and my makeup is a mess! I only carried my lipstick with me. What about the rest?
A: Use a q-tip soaked in water or makeup remover to wipe away any mistakes carefully. A bathroom tissue will help clear up big splotches. Redistribute makeup with the qtip.

Your on-the-go kit:

  • safety pins
  • sewing kit
  • hem tape
  • clear nailpolish
  • stain wipes
  • baby wipes
  • qtips (saturate one each with lipstick, shadow, liner and stow in a baggie)
