How to wear a t-shirt #10

Layering made easy
It looks so easy: two colored tank tops over denim shorts. A tshirt under an unbuttoned shirt. A turtleneck with a blazer.

The secret to perfect layering is to get it to look natural, casual, almost obvious. But the reality is that it takes a bit of care to get that devil-may-care layering look.

Layering multiple items with ease requires a balance of color, fabric weight, and size.

Color - You can layer two tops of bright colors just fine, as long as they complement you. Anything with white, anything with a neutral (black, khaki). But try a few combinations you might not consider: a green turtleneck and a camel blazer. A red flannel shirt over a gray crewneck tshirt. Pick solid with solid, printed with solid, or a big print with a small print. With sheers, pick similar colors. Be sure to coordinate when you are layering more than two items.

Avoid two bold prints together. Avoid layering the same exact color together (ok for black or white). Avoid layering two neon brights together (unless they are thin tank tops away from your face).

Fabric weight - You want to have light items that are thin enough to wear together. Two bulky items add width and weight to your body. Put the thinner item underneath, and iron to help it lie flat. Two thin tshirts, a button down shirt and a sweater vest. DO put sheers over another top. Unbutton or unzip shirts or sweaters to reduce bulk and open up the middle line.

Avoid a bulky turtleneck or sweater under a thick jacket. Avoid wearing sheers underneath a tshirt or tank. Avoid two thick items and watch for different clasps (zips and buttons).

Size - Wearing two camisoles of totally different sizes can cause unsightly bulges, so instead make sure they are identical or almost so, such that a little of one peeks out. Keep in mind length. A shirt under a sweater should be longer, but a tshirt under a button down shirt should be shorter.

Avoid wearing a high necked tank under a low-neck one. Avoid a short sleeve underneath a long sleeve, it will often bulk at the shoulder. Avoid wearing more than three layered items.

Finally, go with your gut. Some bright, bold prints DO go together. And you might be able to wear a bra top under two thin tanks and a shirt and a hoodie after all. Practice makes perfect when it comes to layering.
