Fashion Roulette and Style Poker

In the movie Clueless, Cher (Alicia Silverstone) had a fancy closet that would put together outfits for her at a glance - it would mix and match and find just the right thing. Oh, how we all envied that closet.

And you? Maybe your dream closet combines tops and bottoms with reckless abandon. It would come up with new combinations you could never have dreamed of. It would find fashionable mixes of things you own, and tell you what's in and out. It would allow you to wildly choose outfits that are showstopping, perfectly appropriate, and which fit you like a glove.

Okay, snap out of it. The closet of the future will probably never do that, unless we all wear the same uniforms a la Star Trek. How blah.

Instead of a revolving closet and ultimate fashion software, you can play your own gambling game in your closet. Try it, and you'll come up with combinations you might never have thought of.

If you were to randomly snatch three pieces of clothing from your closet, what would you get? If you have an abundance of tee shirts, maybe you'd just pull out three graphic tshirts. Or if your closet is stocked with jackets and pants and dresses, maybe you'd grab one of each.

In comes Fashion Roulette to save the day.

How it works:

1. You sort your tops and bottoms into two piles (dresses can go in either pile, but I prefer them in the bottoms pile).

2. NOW you randomly snatch two or three things. Maybe you'll come up with a denim jacket and a slinky dress, a pairing you never thought of. Or maybe you'll match a pair of pants, a skirt you can wear as a top, and a cardigan to go over it all - how unique.

Playing Fashion Roulette is tricky: you might surface with things you can't really wear together (a miniskirt, shorts, and a dress). Also, if your clothes are stacked towards one item (more tee shirts, for example) you'll regularly emerge with those. It IS a gamble, but when it pays off, it pays off big.

The fun thing about Fashion Roulette is that you can do it while you're staring at your closet deciding what to wear. Pick two things. See if they go well together. If not, put them back and pick two or three different ones. Figure out how you might wear them (skirts as tops, two tees layered, jackets done up over dresses).

Stop thinking about what others will think of your outfit. Wear it boldly and go where no stylist has gone before. Bluff your way into winning Style Poker.

If you hit on a combination that works, you'll know what it's like. That perfect turquoise tshirt you never thought to wear layered with a pink tee and white jeans. The jeans you would never before have worn with the minidress. The refreshing mix of a gray turtleneck with a white shirt and red capris. A daring pairing of a striped tshirt with a flowery skirt.

Try it for yourself. You'll be surprised what a little gambling can do for your closet. You'll come up with some great finds - I'd bet on it.
