What is the RELAY FOR LIFE?

The Purpose:

The RELAY FOR LIFE is a unique, fun way to raise money for the American Cancer Society while increasing cancer awareness in the Westmoreland County Community.

The Event:

The concept behind the RELAY FOR LIFE involves teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns walking or running around a track, relay-style, for twenty-four straight hours. It is a noncompetitive, team-building event. Participants from the Westmoreland County community come from businesses, industry, churches, families, neighborhoods, schools, and other organizations. Often, teams are formed to rally in support of a co-worker or loved one who is fighting or has lost the battle with cancer.

The Fund Raising:

Each team pays a $15 per person registration fee, upon which they will receive an official RELAY FOR LIFE T-shirt, newsletters, and other correspondence about the event. Each team member is then asked to raise a suggested minimum of $150 in donations to support the American Cancer Society's services, programs, and research. Corporate sponsors are also secured to help underwrite costs and encourage community involvement.

The Impact:

RELAY FOR LIFE is the signature event of the American Cancer Society, and is held in every state in the nation. Worldwide Relay celebrated its 20th anniversary this past year and raised 1.5 billion dolars. There are now 3 million relayers; one in every 100 people relays! And because of we Relay, we have 9 billion survivors!

Luminaria Ceremony:

This event is held to remember and honor loved ones touched by cancer. For a $5.00 donation, you can dedicate a memorial to a loved one who lost the battle to cancer, or honor a loved one who has survived or still fighting the battle of cancer. Please complete the Luminaria Form and forward it to the address listed on the form.

This is a very moving event you won't want to miss. The nestled luminarias line the track and are lit as the names of each are read aloud. Throughout the night, the soft lights mark the way for our walkers and remind us of why we walk for the RELAY FOR LIFE.

NEW to our Relay is A LUMINARIA CARD! You may purchase this very special Luminaria Card that allows you to write in a few words of encouragement and then mail it off to someone important in your life. The verse inside the card indicates that a Luminaria will be lit in memory of or in honor of this individual during the Luminaria Ceremony at the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life Event. Calling all Survivors:

In honor and support of your courage and strength, we extend a special invitation to you and a caregiver to take part in our Survivor's Celebration. Survivors and caregivers are to gather under the Survivors Canopy Tent between the hours of 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. to begin the celebration with a victory lap. This lap is a testimony of the progress we are making in our fight against cancer and our stand that cancer must be eliminated. Following the lap, you are invited back to the Tent for a reception of light refreshments and surprises. To attend, we encourage you to register for this event by contacting Dawn Pruett at 1-888-227-5445, Ext. 1062 with the Survivor's name, address, phone number, years diagnosed, and number of guests attending. Those who pre-register, will have the chance to win donated gifts from local businesses such as health and beauty products and massages. Click here to register for Survivors' Honorary One Lap
