Problem Statement: One or two sentences about what you are studying why you are doing this experiment.  Why is it important or helpful to find out about your topic?

Hypothesis: One sentence.  What do you expect to happen?

Materials list: What will you use to carry out your experiment?  Be as specific as possible.  List dimensions, weights, measurements, and type of materials used. Here are examples:  one AA alkaline battery 150 ml glass test tube
Plastic container, 22 cm x 10 cm x 15 cm  playground sand
Potting soil    garden dirt     Florida brand orange juice

Procedures: A step by step account of how your experiment was carried out. Be specific!

Observations:  A record of what happened during your experiment. Date each entry. Give a time to each entry.   Remember to include mistakes and unexpected results!  Record all measurements and visual observations.  If nothing happened, write, "No change".  Include sketches, photos, or samples of the experiment as it is being carried out.

****If you will be entering the Tri Valley Science Fair, it is MANDATORY that you record all observations in a science log.  You may use a notebook for this.  ****

If you are not entering Tri Valley Science Fair, you must still complete a log of your observations and results.

Research: You will have class time to complete research about the topic you are investigating.  You will be expected to write paragraphs about your topic.
(put research notes in your notebook)

References:
Remember to write down your references as you do research!  See attached sheet for what information you must include.  Remember, you must write down the exact address of a web site.  Don't just list "internet" or "Google" as a reference.  (add references to your research notes in your notebook) A minimum of three sources must be used.

Results:  Your results must be presented in two ways.  You must give a written description of what happened, then include a chart, diagram, or graph of the results.

Conclusions:
What do your results mean?  What did your experiment show?  Was your hypothesis correct?
