Personality:
It's just as well Hal is really a sweetheart. The thought of
6'4" and 250 pounds of miner that can bench press at *least* twice his own weight flying into a rage is downright terrifying. This is not to say Hal does not have a temper. He does get aggravated from time to time. Fortunately, one basso growl from him is enough to convince the most hardheaded person of the error of their ways. There are a few things, though, that are guaranteed to get more than a growl out of him. One is someone mistreating Echo. The other is someone mistreating anyone in his family.
Generally, he is gentle, patient, and kind. People generally find this out later, however. Most people, on first meeting, are more than a bit cowed by his enormous physique and rock-shaking basso voice. It takes them a bit of time to realize he's harmless. The one person that *knows* he's harmless is Ylisana. Hal comes in for a lot of teasing from the other miners because it's a well-known fact that Ylisana rules the Cothold, not Hal.
History:
Hal is the second son of a very loving and devoted couple. He
inherited more than his fair share of his father's size right from the start, being nearly 12 pounds at birth. He grew quickly, and was noted for his rather phlegmatic personality. He entered the Minercraft at the rather young age of 10, but by then he was already towering several inches over his agemates and outweighed them by nearly 20 pounds.
He learned well and quickly, taking to the Minecraft like a firelizard to the air. When he was sixteen, a new family moved into the Crom Minercraft cothold, bringing with them their fourteen turn old daughter, Ylisana. It was love at first sight, at least on Hal's part. He courted her, and, a few weeks after he made Journeyman at eighteen, finally got what he wanted. They, like Hal's parents, are very devoted to one another.
The next Turn, Hal finally had enough marks saved up to purchase a wher egg for himself. He considered the animals to be vital, not just useful, to a Miner's work, and wanted one for himself. The egg hatched a green, whom he names Echo. He tolerated no mistreatment of the creature and has a deep, understanding
bond with her.
A few Turns later, some Miners were asked to go to the South and begin construction on a new Weyr. After talking it over with Ylisana, Hal volunteered, and their entire family moved South to the Miner's Haven Cothold, which is just outside the Weyr. He's spent the Turns since then carving the Weyr out bit by bit, and recently, teaching the dragonriders to do the same.

History: Hal purchased her egg sixteen turns ago. Since then she has worked side by side with him underground, ferretting out unsafe spots. She's saved his neck a few times from unexpected cave-ins that not even she sensed were coming.
