Raistlin Majere-
Raistlin is my favorite DL character, so I'll start with him. He begins his life as just another child in the town of Solace. However, Raistlin is weaker than the other children, so his twin brother Caramon and his older half-sister Kitiara Uth Matar look out for him. It is Kitiara who persuades a visiting archmagus to enroll Raistlin in nearby school of magic, where it is discovered that Raistlin is very gifted in magic. Years pass, and Raistlin and his brother become acquainted with new friends after the deaths of their parents. When Raistlin is twenty-one, the group of friends decides to split up and meet again in five years. Raistlin and his brother travel to the Tower of High Sorcery at Wayreth, where Raistlin is tested. During his test, he makes a bargin with the lich, Fistandantilus. The lich helps him pass his test in exchange for his life, but Raistlin manages to escape, and emerges wearing the red robes of the goddess Lunitari. Unfortunately, his health is shattered, with a terrible cough, his skin is tinged gold, and his eyes are golden also, with hourglass pupils. Through his eyes, Raistlin sees the world dying. By giving him such cursed vision, Par-Salian, the master of the Tower of Wayreth hoped to teach Raistlin pity and compassion. Raistlin instead learns bitterness and hatred. After his test, Raistlin and his brother travel until five years pass and they meet the rest of the companions at the beginning of what was to be called the War of the Lance... After the war, Raistlin, now wearing the black robes of Nuitari, goes to Palanthas, and becomes master of the abandoned Tower of High Sorcery there, fulfilling the prophecy, by becoming the Master of Past and Present. Two years after the War of the Lance, Raistlin travels back to the time just before the Cataclysm to learn from Fistandantilus. Caramon, Lady Crysania, and Tas are sent back in time by Par-Salian to try and stop him... Raistlin discovers his folly before it is too late for Krynn, and remains in the Abyss, preventing the escape of the Queen of Darkness. And there he stayed for over twenty years... Then came the Chaos War. Tas and Palin Majere, Raistlin's nephew, come to the Tower of Palanthas, and, with Raistlin's help, enter the Abyss. There, they witness a meeting of the gods. Raistlin is giving his nephew final instructions on who to carry the message of doom to, when a phantasm of Kitiara appears and wounds Palin. Thus Raistlin is forced to enter Krynn again, so that Palin might live. But after the war, he leaves with the gods. This time for good...or is it? Thirty years later comes the War of the Souls, when a girl named Mina appears, claiming to be the chosen of the One God. Raistlin's help is needed (though not wanted) by the rest of the gods of Krynn. For the "One God" had hidden the world of Krynn from their view, and Raistlin had a plan to find it... Raistlin is possibly THE most influential person who ever walked the face of Krynn. His power and wisdom remain unmatched. After all, he was, in one reality, the only god. Raistlin has a large following of fans, mostly female. We are also a rather militant and all around strange group of people. But then, isn't everyone strange in some way? Just because we idolize someone who we are told is only a fantasy fiction character, and we wish to someday travel to Krynn to meet him...:::sighs::: Ah, well.
Fizban-
Fizban is the next best character in the DragonLance series, so I'm talking about him next. We are first introduced to Fizban when the companions are in the slave caravan on the way to Pax Tharkas. He is demanding that the Fewmaster arrest a tree for blocking his sunlight. The eternal description of Fizban is: an old man in mouse gray robes with a bent, battered, and shapeless hat. Fizban appears and disappears throughout the journies of the companions, and in the end reveals to them what they had already begun to suspect. He also appears at the end of the Chaos War to say good bye to Krynn one last time before leaving with Raistlin. Fizban is a funny, powerful, and enigmatic character. When one first encounters him, one thinks is is just a fool. Then, something happens, and one begins to doubt that first impression. Finally, different pieces of a much larger puzzle begin to fall into place. He is caring and gentle with everyone from Tas to Raistlin. And above all, he is wise. It is comforting to think that his counterpart on earth may be a little like him. Some theorize that Zifnab, of the Death Gate Cycle, is the alternate identity of Fizban. I have also recently heard the theory that Obi-Wan Kenobi is indeed alive, and is masquerading as Fizban. None of these theories, however, have been substantiated by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
No more time right now, but I guess I should do Caramon next.
Tasslehoff Burrfoot-
The first thing to understand about Tasslehoff, or Tas, as he is commonly called, is that he is a kender. A kender is short, like a dwarf or gnome, insatiably curious about everything, has a penchant for "finding" things that other people had in their pouches (but that is not to be confused with stealing...kender are very offended if accused of stealing), and are immune to fear. Near the beginning of the Chronicles, when we first meet Tas, he is a fairly typical kender, the main difference being his devotion to the rest of the Companions. As he travels with the Companions, however, through actions of Fizban, Flint, and his own, Tas begins to change. He develops a sense of justice and learns to fear, not for himself, but for those who he cares about. His sense of loyalty grows even stronger. Tas has a major part in the War of the Lance, but his work on Krynn is not finished there. He travels back in time with Caramon by accident (on the part of Par-Salian), and sees the Cataclysm, as well as the Dwarfgate Wars. Through him, time is changed, after he and Caramon see the future of the world if Raistlin succeeds. The Chaos War would not have been won without the help of Tasslehoff on several occasions, but especially at the end. Thirty years later, Tas, presumed dead, reappears on Krynn. However, he finds that the reality that he is in is very different than the one that he was supposed to be in. Eventually, with Raistlin's help, he may be able to set things right--if the One God doesn't get to him first. Tas is a fun-loving companion whose help could be used on almost any quest (even if after a few days, everyone wants to strangle him). He just has a sort of childish charm that makes him a lovable character.
