| We are not an agency that sets out to reform. There are agencies in Slough where people can go for reformation, particularly for alcoholics and also drug addiction. So what do we do? We meet on a Monday night outside in the open in Slough but with overhead shelter from the rain . The Slough Run is non judgemental and comes there to give friendship to anyone who feels the need for companionship that night. We give out hot nourishing food, warm drinks, fruit, clothing, and also blankets if they are required. But the main thing that we give is our friendship to people just as they are that night. As someone said , " We don't have to pretend; we can be ourselves and still be loved for what we are deep down inside." We meet people's needs that night. Sometimes someone wants to be taken to hospital, may be injured as a result of a fight, or it may be a psychiatric patient who wants help. Sometimes someone comes who is lonely and wants to talk; sometimes a runaway. We were pleased this year to be able to get a fifteen year old to see her Aunt and ask her to tell the school who were very helpful to her It may be a Mother who is in great debt after being left and we take her and the children over to Tesco's and make sure that there is food in the cupboard for them We sometimes send away on holiday the children of alcoholics who need a treat and freedom from worry; those on a low wage. Sometimes have had to overspend for clothing and we help with food for them to eat that night as they are often very hungry. Sometimes we arrange to get furniture for someone who has been given a room but who needs furniture to make it a home. We try to keep in touch with families whom we have helped with difficulties. In fact we meet life and its needs as we see it that night. Not long ago, man in his thirties who was a hard drinker had ben told that he has just three months to live. He needed us so badly. Sadly we have known a number of deaths over the years and we are glad that they had us to turn to for comfort until the last and we are sometimes asked if we will be at the funeral. We have over the years seen people get back into society and we are so glad to see them again, and welcome them sometimes as a helper. In spite of all this, Moday nights are often full of smiles and banter. However, we need funds to meet these needs. You can help by supporting Red Hot Theatre and their next production, Tissue & Think. Alternatively you may make a donation. Our bank account is 'The Slough Run ' at The Abbey National ,Slough High Street. 'We" are THE SLOUGH RUNNERS. There is no office and so no administration costs! We are a registered charity with Trustees and so our accounts have to be carefully receipted and audited. We rely on donations which we see are spent as needed and not hoarded! The Charitable Trust sees also to The London Run which was begun also and has separate accounts . We are always looking for helpers and need committed people. Other donations such as food and good clean warm clothing are very welcome. We do not have photographs taken as we safeguard people's privacy. Thank you for taking the time to read about us, and we hope to see you at Red Hot Theatre's upcoming production, Tissue & Think. |
