Moorit, Black & Katmoget
Breeding Stock

We  focus our efforts on producing a top quality moorit flock of Shetlands.  Tired of working with genetics that produce inconsistent results fostered by random breeding of colors and fleece types?  Are you looking for soft, fine fleece found in the "Classic Shetland Sheep" with emphasis on Crimp?

Our flock is geared toward multi generation moorit * moorit matings, reinforced by selective linebreeding.  2007 Senior sire will be
Pine Valley Brent 33R (F2).  All breeding age females are moorit or black with varying degrees of UK genetics.
We are "Keeping the best and culling the rest."

Shetland Sheep: The Shetlands roots go back over a thousand years and probably were brought to the Shetland Islands by Viking Settlers.  They belong to the Northern European short tailed group which also contains the Finsheep, Norvwegian Spaelsau, Icelandics, Romanov's and others.

The Shetland is one of the smallest of the British breeds and it retains many characteristics of primitive sheep and is considered such.  Rams normally weigh between 90-125 lbs. and ewes about 60-80 lbs.  Rams usually have spiral horns and ewes are typically polled, although horned ewes are found.  These animals are fine boned and have naturally short, fluke-shaped tails that do not require docking.

Shetland wool has a Bradford count usually in the upper 50's to lower 60's. The fiber range is 20-25 microns.  Fleeces average 2-4 pounds per animal and have a staple length of 2-4.5 inches.

Shetlands come in one of the widest range of colors of any breed of sheep.  There are 11 main colors and 30 markings.   Many of the rarer markings are not found in the US populations.  In the US and UK the wool is prized by hand spinners.  Shetland ewes are very hardy, good mothers, easy lambers and produce plenty of milk.
