| The Pine Valley Shetland Sheep flock was formed in the late 90's with a selection of foundation ewes from several established flocks. Initial purchases consisted of females in black, grey, moorit and fawn with varying degrees of UK genetics. It became obvious early on that our superior offspring all resulted from F2 (Campaign Timothy) foundation females tracing back to recent UK semen imports. As such we quickly culled individuals who did not trace back to these select SSBG (now SSS) sires bred for soft, fine fleeces of moderate length. Foundation sire was Bitterroot Emery a single coated moorit with excellent conformation, crimp and softness. Subsequent moorit sires have included Under Hill Justinian a double bred F2 (Enfield Greyling & Willowcroft Jamie), F3 Under The Son Chaco (Campaign Timothy), & F1 Whistlestop 0421 "Brent" (Island Kurkigarth Brent). Complimented by homebred UK influenced rams exhibiting similar or improved traits.. As a result our efforts have focused on working with the improved fleeces found on the "Classic Shetland". Not straight, coarse, primitive fleeces more typical of other Northern Short Tail Sheep. We continually eliminate the inferior animals, including entire family groups. We place no priority on retaining genetics from any single foundation female. Retention is soley based on the individuals annual performance and meeting desired characteristics. As a result each animal competes against the entire flock for breeding rights. |
