The Character creation on the Neverwinter Nights Computer game is similar to the standart point buy method described in the paper based game (D&D) DM's Guide. Basicaly you have 25 point to spend and all six abilities (str, dex, con, int, wis, cha) start on 8. The abilitiy's values are the following:

Abilitiy

Cost

Abilitiy

Cost

9

1 14 6
10 2 15 8
11 3 16 10
12 4 17 13
13 5 18 18

For everyone who doesn't want to calculate things use the following scores:

15  14  13  12  10  8

Customizing the look of your character involves choosing a head, body, clothing, optional tattoos, skin color, hair color, and tattoo colors. Finally, you select your portrait from a current selection of 250, a voice set, and your name. A fantasy name generator is included for those suffering from writer's block. If you just want to jump into the game, several premade characters will be available.

Color Spray
Neverwinter Nights' graphics are looking better than ever. Besides reflections on the armor and hair of characters, clothing and hair will now flow with movement. Around fifty creatures models are being created to allow for several hundred monsters using differences in textures and colors. The tile sets for the terrain have been consolidated down to nine including city interior, castle interior, forest, evil dungeon, caves/mines, city and rural/farms. These tiles are ten by ten meters, with map areas having a maximum size of 32 by 32, about four times larger than an outdoor area in Baldur's Gate II. By stringing together these maps using portals, much larger areas can be created and the different maps can potentially be on different servers to create persistent dungeons.

As Neverwinter is a multiplayer game with up to 64 people on a server, talking with the other players is important. Besides several chat channels, Neverwinter Nights will have a quick chat system similar to that in Tribes 2. A series of keystrokes will broadcast recorded phrases. The beauty of the system is that it is fast and language independent, important when people with different localized versions of the game play together. Conversations with non-player characters will be visible above the characters and these discussions can be interrupted at any time. No more waiting for the end of a conversation like in Baldur's Gate II.

Trudging through the sewers
The creation of the editors and the implementation of the rules are largely done. Trent mentioned that neat rules as parrying and called shots have made it in and that the task of wrangling the third edition D&D rules into the game turned out to be a larger than expected due to the flexibility of the new system. The designers are now hard at work creating the modules for the adventure that ships with the game. The tile sets are well on their way, but many monsters and spells effects remain to be made. The client that will allow players to dungeon master modules on the fly was not yet done so they did not provide more details about it. BioWare estimated that Neverwinter Nights would be out this beginnings of 2002.
