The System of Human Progress This system is an attempt to explain the existing relationship structures required for humankind survival and prosperity. The stronger (or better quality) the relationships within the system, the more efficiently the system works towards progress and a better world for all. When we refer to the 'individual' we are talking about you and your needs. Individual's basic needs (from Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs) for survival and progress include; air, water, food, sleep, shelter, belonging, security and esteem. 'Society' refers to humankind, our ancestors, future generations, government, laws, economy and the interrelationships within society's own systems. 'Environment' refers to both the natural and built (human made) environment including buildings, plants, animals and all the continuously evolving systems that work within it. 'Wise actions' feed and strengthen the relationships within this system. The system for individuals attaining their needs for survival depends on wise actions. The level of wisdom within the actions taken directly affects the quality of these relationships. The result of wise actions are 'needs and benefits'. All wise actions emerge primarily from the individual. It is important to note that subsequent needs and benefits may not be direct returns. The needs or benefits may cause ripple effects that contribute to a better world that may only impact on you years later, in ways that you never imagined or in ways that you take for granted. In this system the individual must consider their responsibility to themselves for without self respect the individual cannot fully contribute to moving towards a better world. Wisdom Wise actions are the result of wise decisions. There are three overlapping components that help to explain the requirements of what we regard as a wise decision.

When a wise decision has been made there is a visible overlapping for consideration of knowledge, experience and responsibility. 'Knowledge' of the situation ensures that a strong understanding of the components, the context, and impacts of the action is considered. 'Experience' ensures that past experimentation or similar situations have been considered. It allows us to preceive a situation in the context of its opportunities and challenges to move towards a better world for all. The inclusion of 'responsibility' in our decision making ensures that we consider ourselves, others, society, the environment and their relationships. The level of wisdom in any decision depends on the quality of the knowledge, experience and responsibility. Responsibility The quality of responsibility taken in any decision has a strong impact on the level of wisdom. Below is a scale developed to show some of the levels of responsibility.

Complete lack of responsibility is refered to as 'mindless irresponsibility'. Individuals move towards 'mindless freedom' by only considering own desires or wants without considering anyone or anything else. 'Imposed' responsibility refers to situations when an individual makes a decision based on laws, rules or what they get paid for. 'Localised' responsibility refers to situations where an individual is responsible within their family, community or group but neglects to consider external groups. 'Inclusive responsibilty' is an attempt to consider impacts of the decision on the individual, society and the environment as much as possible. That level of responsibility in our decision making moves humankind towards 'responsible freedom'. Responsible freedom is the freedom to do anything provided our duty to oursleves, society and the environment has been considered. Summary Wise actions that emerge from the individual contributes to strengthening the relationships between ourselves society and the environment. These relationships fulfil our individual basic needs for survival and progress. The wise decisions that affect our actions consider knowledge, experience and responsibilty for each situation. The amount of responsibility we show in our decisions greatly affects the wisdom and the end quality of all our actions. It is intended that these diagrams can demonstrate the impacts of our everyday actions can affect the end quality of our needs and our desires for freedom. These views are imbedded in our aspirations as a group for a better world.
