Introduction
The study of chemistry can
lead to a greater understanding of many things.
In this individual learning activity you will use the Internet to
research how chemistry impacts the different fields of science, how it
affects you, then summarize this information in the form of a table.
Throughout the project, you are
to consider the question:
How does chemistry affect your daily life?
The Task
At the end of this
activity, you will develop a table that identifies how chemsitry impacts the various
fields of science as well as your daily life.
This activity meets the following
standards:
Roaring
Fork School District Standards for Chemistry:
- 1.1.4: Select and use
appropriate technologies to gather, process, and analyze data and to
report information related to an investigation,
- 6.1.1: Evaluate print
and visual media for scientific evidence, bias, or opinion.
NETS
Standards:
- III A: Student use
technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and
promote creativity.
- V A: Student use technology to locate,
evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.
The
Process
1)
Read section
1.2 in your text book, then use Microsoft
Word, or another word processing program to develop a table that
follows this format:
- Include 5
columns. The columns should represent 2 different examples of how
chemistry impacts an area of science. The last column should
describe how the area specifically affects you.
- Include 7 rows.
The first row should contain the titles of the columns. The other
rows should cover the following topics:
- Materials
- Energy
- Medicine and
Biotechnology
- Agriculture
- The Environment
- Astronomy and Space
Exploration
<>>- <>When you have finished the table, you
should answer the following question in paragraph form, somewhere below
the table: Why do you think it is important
to study chemistry?>
to see an example of what the table should look like.
2)
Use
the following web sites to supplement your research on how chemistry
impacts the
different areas of science.
- Materials:
- Timeline of battery development:
- Medicinal Chemistry:
- Agricultural Chemistry:
- Environmental Chemistry:
- Astrochemistry:
3) Be sure to use the rubric found in
the evaluation
section while completing your table. When
you are finished,
print off the table, put a proper heading on it, and turn it in to
your
instructor.
Conclusion
At the
end of this activity, you should have produced a table summarizing the
impacts that chemsitry has had on society. By completing the
project, you should be able to
recognize how chemistry affects you and realize the
importance of studying chemistry.
Evaluation
Your
brochure will be evaluated with the Chemistry and You Table Rubric.
