WRTG-AM 1000 History

WRTG hit the local airwaves August 11th,1969, as country station WKBQ, founded by Edward Atsinger, brother-in-law of Salem Communications founder Stu Epperson and (later) himself one of the founders of AM/FM Communications. The daytime-only WKBQ originally broadcast at 250 watts with a directional antenna, and, after nearly a decade on-air, went non-directional with 1,000 watts. In 1987, the station became classic country WHEV under the ownership of Henry E. Veil. WHEV went dark in the early 1990s. Veil gave the license to Durham-based Carolina Christian Communications, which signed 1000 AM back on the air in 1994 with a simulcast of contemporary Christian station WRTP, 1530 AM. A third AM signal, WGSB, 1060 AM in Mebane, joined the simulcast in 1995. All three stations later became "His Radio WRTP" after Radio Training Network purchased them, along with a WRTP-FM in Roanoke Rapids and several FM translators across the Triangle and Eastern North Carolina. In October of 2004, WRTG, along with WRTP-AM and WGSB were purchased by Estuardo Valdemar Rodriguez and Leonor Rodriguez, owners of WLLN in Lillington, for $1.1 million. On February 3rd, 2005, the three AM stations ceased broadcasting the "His Radio WRTP" Christian format. After a day off-air, the trimulcast resumed broadcasting the "Que Pasa" Spanish-language format on February 4th, 2005.
