President's Message by Pres. Dante Verano

September is the Rotary's New Generation month. As part of our community service, it is very timely to focus our attention to organize, revive, and energize the Interact Club, Rotaract Club and the Rotakids. Let us contribute to the development of these futures leaders. To echo RI President Bhichai Rattakul message in the September issue of the Rotarian: "we must support programs that will provide a better future of our youth. The next generation holds the key to resolving the conflict of today." We have an existing Interact Club and Rotaract Club at OLOPSC. Let us help our Chairman PD George Ty to "breath fresh life" into this Club.

The recently concluded 1st Inter-Club Meeting last Saturday was a success. I am very proud of our Club members who "dominated" the interactive forum with MMDA Chairman BF Fernando. These gutsy & courageous members who can face "the Man of the Hour" made the night a very remarkable one. Thanks to PP Roland, PP Jimmy, Dir. Jessie, PD Lito. Same appreciation goes to all Rotarians and their spouses who attended the activity. They all look very debonair in their blue barongs. That night was graced with attendance of our very own Congressman Del De Guzman, Mayor Marides "MCF" Fernando, Vice Mayor Rtn. Marion Andres; DepEd School Superintendent Dr. Jerome Mendoza with our very own Rtn Claro Capco the second highest officer of Marikina DepEd.

This Sunday, the District Duckpin Tournament will resume. We are scheduled to play in the morning. Sadly we failed to land in the top sixteen. Our team best effort was just enough to place us at 20th spot. Thanks to our players who did their best, win or lose masaya pa rin tayo, we really enjoy the game and camaraderie. There is always tomorrow to prove our worth.

Together we will SOW THE SEED OF LOVE to realize all our goal of serving our fellowmen.

"SIGHT FOR LIFE PROJECT"

During our meeting last August 15,2002, PP Jimmy Capco, our District chairman of Eye Surgical team, presented two of the club's sponsored cataract patients a day after their successful cataract operations with intraocular lens on their right eyes. The patients expressed their sincere appreciation and gratitude to our club for giving them a second opportunity to have clearer vision.

The first patient, Susana Cilajis, 48-year-old female, married from Calumpang was operated on the right eye. The OR fee was shouldered by Pres. Dante Verano, while the second patient, Rolando De Jesus, 40 year old male, single from Sta. Elena was also operated in the right eye with OR fee was provided by PP Ver Farcon.

The club is very grateful to Pres. Dante and PP Ver for their charitable and compassionate support and likewise to the members of the club's committee: PE Dindo, Rtn. Ronie, Dir. Val and Sec. Vincent. Let us continue to serve more and realize our plan to run our own operating room for a continuing "Sight for Life" Project.

"1ST INTER-CLUB MEETING AND MOST OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVANTS AWARDS NIGHT"

The eight clubs of the Marikina Zone gathered last Saturday, Aug 31, 2002 at the Riverbend Hotel for their 1st Inter-Club Meeting and awarding of the Most Outstanding Public Servants Awards. The Guest Speaker was no other than the MMDA Chairman Hon. Bayani Fernando. He talked about his new experience and challenges as the new MMDA Chairman as well as his initial accomplishments. He commended the efforts of the Rotarians for honoring the Public Servants of Marikina. Chairman BF believes that the success in the implementation of the important government projects is through the dedicated hard work and commitment of the working force, the ordinary public servants. A very lively and informative Open forum followed the remarks of Chairman BF with most of the relevant questions and comments coming from the Rotarians of RC Marikina.

"SEPTEMBER IS NEW GENERATIONS MONTH"

The slogan "Every Rotarian an Example to Youth" expresses Rotary's commitment to New generations. September is a good time to consider the many ways in which Rotarians reach out to help young people.

Rotary clubs all over the world carry out youth-related projects, such as sponsoring summer camps, coordinating outings for disadvantaged children, and building playgrounds. RI helps young people develop important life skills through four structured programs: Rotaract, Interact, Youth Exchange, and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA).

Through grants of The Rotary Foundation of RI, Rotarians support international projects, such as equipping children's hospitals or schools. And every Rotarian is united in PolioPlus, which has already protected two billion children from the paralysing disease and, when completed, will benefit all children in the next generation and beyond.

By serving the needs of young people in key areas - health, education, and self-development - Rotary clubs prepare New Generations for the brightest future possible.
