President's Message
by Pres. Dante Verano
Everyone loves a child. A child in every family is always a source of joy. However, only few are aware of the danger that a child is now facing our community. Child abuse is now a problem in our society. Many children are victims of physical, verbal, psychological and worse, sexual abuse. Statistic shows that the perpetrators are usually close relatives of the child victim. We have to do something about this. Our club is committed to protect the children in our community that is why last Thursday, we launch our "Child Protection Project". It is a poster campaign to create awareness and encourage the community to report incidence of Child Abuse. Project Chairman Doy Smith together with some Rotarians & their spouses distributed and posted the campaign poster in the bulletin boards of some elementary schools and barangay halls. Parents, community workers, teachers and all friends of children, the Rotarians should take upon themselves to accomplish the task to provide a safe haven for the children. No matter how enormous the undertaking, it will provide better future for children. A forum for teachers, parents and the children will be scheduled in the future to further intensify the campaign for Child Protection.
The search for the Most Outstanding Public Elementary School Teacher is now on-going. Chairman Treas. Fabi Cadiz in cooperation with the Marikina Division of City Schools will use a new methodology of judging. Each contestant will be evaluated individually in their classroom by the judges. Rotarians are welcome to witness this. Schedule of which is written in this bulletin. Winner of this search will represent our Zone in the search for District Most Outstanding Public Servant (MOPS). Good luck to all contestants.
Our second Health Care Project last Sunday at Marikina Heights Barangay Hall was a success. Many benefited from the Free Medical Check up, free ECG, free Cholesterol & triglyceride determination. Once again my appreciations and gratitude to Chairman PP Eric Ignacio for a job well done. This goes also to all Rotarians and their spouses who unselfishly shared their Sunday morning with our Club. Maraming Salamat po sa uulitin!
Tonight our club is lucky to have a very knowledgeable speaker and resource person for our Continuing Rotary Education Program. He is very close to us and very supportive of our club, he is no other than PDG Teddy Zamora. Let us all listen to him; I am sure we will learn a lot from him on the topic: Membership Development and Retention.
This Sunday, on the 3rd leg of the District Duckpin Tournament, our club is aiming to be included in the top 16 slots. Kaya natin ito. Let us cheer our mighty Team and support them to victory. See you there!
I am very happy for the continuous & generous support you are extending to our club. Ipagpatuloy po natin ito I love you all.

"CLASSIFICATION TALK: EDUCATION"
Our meeting last August 8, 2002, was a lively one. Congratulations PP Onie for a well planned and researched recognition time. Of course everyone was perked up by the entertainment time of PP Eric resulting in the pronouncement of the Rotarian of the week, my inaanak Treas. Fabi, who bested the rest of the Rotarians in the field of physical fitness, luck, flexibility and intelligence. The main event was the delivery of the classification talk of baby Rotarian Claro that gave as glimpse of the real state of the education program in the city of Marikina. His talk also proves that he can be an asset of our club especially in the implementation of our projects, which involved with the Education Department.
"HEALTH CARE PROJECT"

"THINGS TO REMEMBER RE: MEMBERSHIP"
Q: What is Rotary's policy on dual-gender membership?
A: "All Rotary clubs are encouraged to have membership consisting of both men and women. Governors are encouraged to promote dual-gender membership in all clubs in their districts and, where clubs that have single-gender membership remain, should promote the establishment of new dual-gender clubs in the locality of the existing single gender clubs."
Q: Can we change senior active members to honorary?
A: Yes, but this is not recommended. Honorary membership is a distinction for meritorious service in furtherance of Rotary ideals and should be conferred only in exceptional cases. Honorary members are entitled to no club rights or privileges, except the right to visit other clubs.
Q: What is the effect of the new classification system of having only two classifications (active and honorary) to the attendance exemption?
A: The policy of excused absences still applies. A member may be excused if his age plus years as a Rotarian add up to 85 or greater. But it is not automatic. The member has to notify the club secretary in writing and the board must agree to excuse the member from attendance.
Q: What do the changes in the classification system mean?
A: The members still retain their classifications, but the number of members allowed under a single classification has changed, reflecting the reduction in types of membership from five to two. In a club with 50 members or less, up to 5 members may have the same classification; in a club with 50 or more, 10 percent may.
Q: What are the reasons for which a member may be excused from attendance?
A: If he or she is -
- "is called away unexpectedly from a club meeting and subsequently produces evidence to the satisfaction of the board that such action was reasonable;"
- is, at the time of the meeting, serving as special representative of the governor in the formation of a new club;"
- "is a current officer of RI;"
- participation in a "club-sponsored community event or meeting authorized by the board;"
- "attendance at a board meeting or, if authorized by the board meeting of a service committee to which the member is assigned;"
"the board may excuse a member's absence for reasons which it considers to be good and sufficient."
Q: Do members keep their classifications until their membership is terminated?
A: Not necessarily. The board may correct or adjust any member's classification, after notifying the member and allowing a hearing on it. If members change their careers, the club may continue their membership under the new classifications.
