President's Message by Pres. Dante Verano

In this August Issue of The Rotarian, President Bhichai Rattakul message emphasize the need to focus on attracting younger members and those of diverse backgrounds and vocation to join our ranks in the Rotary. With the RI goal of increasing membership to 1.5 million by 2005, we need to do our best to share in this responsibility of reaching that goal. However, we have to focus on attracting quality member, not just on quantity of members. Everyone is encouraged to learn more on how to orient prospective and new members by reading the August Issue of The Rotarian special section on page 21 about membership education and development. This was also the theme echoed in the just concluded District Membership Forum hosted by RC Mandaluyong North. Past District Governor Jocjoc Bolante was very knowledgeable of the topic he conveyed and all the participants in that forum gained a lot of experience and knowledge on how to attract, invite, recruit and retain members. I am very thankful to PP Ver, PP Boy, PE Dindo, Sec. Vincent, PS Bong and Rtn. Jun Jun for joining me in the District Membership Forum.

The District Duckpin Tournament started last Sunday at Farmers Plaza Bowling Centre. In the opening ceremonies, PP Manny, PP Flor, IPP Tony, Sps. Vising, Pres. Noemi, Rotakid DL, PE Dindo, Dir. Celso, PS Floren, Rtn. Rey, Treas. Fabi and Rtn. Jun Jun joined me in this existing event. I am happy to extend my cheers to our players Chairman PT Rolly, PP Roland, PS Floren, PP Onne, PP Jimmy T., PD George; our "reserve" players Dir. Celso, Rtn. Jun Jun, Treas. Fabi and myself are hoping that we will not be forever be "benched" throughout the season. (kapag malas ang key players, kami na ang bahalang sumalo). I will not miss to thank PP Flor and PE Dindo as members of the Cheering Squad; they have provided the much needed moral booster to our Team. Next game this coming Sunday, we need to show our support to our Team, hope to see you there.

Tonight, our Baby Rotarian, Claro Capco will deliver his classification talk about Education. Let us learn from him about the present condition of our Educational System as a whole and the Public School System of Marikina City in particular. This will help us to understand and serve better our adopted schools: Malanday Elementary and High Schools and Sto. Nio Elementary School.

Each of us can do our part to "Sow the Seeds of Love". It only in "doing it" we can understand what Rotary is all about. Let continue in serving. I love you all.

"MEMBERSHIP: A PRIMARY FOCUS"

Why is membership important?

Imagine if the club were to lose 10 percent of its members. How would that affect our service program? What projects might not get finished? Which ones might never have been started? Now consider what our club could accomplish with 10 percent or five percent or even two percent more members. Think about the professional expertise we could add to our club's overall profile simply by filling all open classifications. Think about the new ideas and new club service projects that could be initiated. Think about the additional people to take on leadership and committee roles. Every new Rotarian brings a range of personal and professional resources and knowledge that can greatly strengthen our club's ability to serve throughout the community and the world.

What is membership development?

The three essential elements of membership growth are:
  • the proposal of new members
  • the retention of existing members
  • and the extension of Rotary through the formation of new clubs

These three elements are equally important, as illustrated by this simple membership equation:

New Members + Retaining Members (Retention) + New Clubs (Extension) = Membership
