Since most people dont know what a Tech Writer is or does, Ive included a transcript of a speech I gave, which answers that very question. Click here to find out what is a tech writer? Past
For two years I was a regular English major, concentrating on the classics and their interpretations. People would ask me what I wanted to do after college and I didnt really know. I figured the only things you could do with an English major was to be a writer or to be a teacher/professor (part time writer, full time lecturer). I didnt want to rely on having to come up with a catchy novel every year to pay my bills, and I dont have the patience to stand up and lecture to a mostly-hostile audience who has no interest in the class, but is forced to be there because they need an English elective. I wandered aimlessly through the first two years, until I took Biblical and Classical Literature with Dr. Brockman. He asked me what I wanted to do after college and when I told him that I didnt know, he told me to look into a Business and Technical Writing Degree. He explained that basically every business everywhere needs someone to edit their documents, or someone to write employee handbooks, form letters, newsletters and myriads of other things. Then he explained that Delawares undergraduate program has a 100% job placement rating, which is almost unheard of. So I looked into it. I can still take the classical lit courses for the English major, but I also learn useful skills for the job market after college. To me it was the best way that I could marry my desire to learn and read about the classics, while pursuing a career in something that would allow me to make money doing something I love. Future
