The stamps a climber earns on his or her way up Fuji are unique to each station.  The stick is more than a mere souvenir; you really need it to negotiate the climb, both uphill and downhill.  Afterwards, the stick can rest in a place of honor over your mantelpiece, with only you and the others who have climbed Fuji understanding its significance.

A worker at one of the stations brands a stamp in a selectee's walking stick.
