Japanese School |

American students will find that the Japanese school is very different. Students always wear uniforms. Students are assigned one room as their classroom. All classes, except physical education are conducted in that room all day. At the end of the school day students clean the room, wash the boards and clean the halls and bathrooms. They take pride in keeping their room neat and clean. Isn't this very different than our schools? |

These are the only approved school uniforms. The tennis shoes are all white with green or yellow strips. Socks are solid black or white only. Black dress attire is required for assemblies, girls wear their shorts and tee shirts under the dress clothes. Days of temptures in the 70's means its cool, so they wear a jacket. |

Teacher's room: This is the only room assigned to all teachers. They do not have a classroom to themselves. At Daiyon, (JH #4) there are 18 teachers for almost 300 students, grades 7,8 and 9. Each grade is divided in to a section with 7 th grade being 1A, 1B, and 1C. 8th and 9th are the same three section. Teachers teach all students. Each subject is taught three or four times a week in rotating time schedules. Teachers provide all their own supplies, including computers, paper and all desk top equipment. Teachers are at school by 7:30 and often don't leave until 6:00. There is no extra compensation for before or after school activities.. |

Bowing in respect: Teachers begin the day by bowing to the prinicpal and she returns the bow. At the beginning of the sports festival Principal Murai accepts the bow of all students and their words of welcome to her. This tradition shows respect to elders and those of lower rank too. |

Japanese school culture: In all schools, student enter at their own lobby. Here they must store their street shoes and exchange for indoor school shoes. They are also responsible to serve hot lunch to the other students in their section. They are very careful to wear masks, hair covers and aprons. Food is brought to each grade level and the students eat in their classroom. No one eats until all are served. Each student then cleans his plates and bowls. Below is a typical lunch for teachers and students, it costs $2.85 a meal. I thought it was delicious. |
