WORDS OF WISDOM

Happiness and Contentment

Raymond Ribeiro

Happiness is something that is innate within all of us as human beings. We do not have to learn how to be happy and we do not have to be shown how to be happy. Like laughter, we laugh when something is funny. A child does not have to be taught how to laugh or how to allow themself to be happy and content. The joy that we continually seek in our adult life is already there within us. It is not based on any particular social circumstance (like material wealth or even good physical health) for it to reveal itself to us- we have felt and experienced it before.

The dilemma we face is that somehow, we have seemingly created obstacles , which impede us from experiencing "inner joy" as the years pass by in our life. Such impediments can be seen in our goals in life, (that is, setting unrealistic goals). Such goals can be seen in terms of social situations, career etc., to the point that we do not achieve them, therefore, we create more reasons not to be happy and content in our life.

What I am saying is that society- in a way- tells us that we cannot just live and be content in our life because we need to have something outside of our self to justify our happiness- more or less. The famous quote which tells us to "seek first the kingdom of heaven..." is a very interesting concept. Of course, I know there are many interpretations to it, but for me, the above is what comes to my mind whenever I hear this quote.

I feel that the initial steps that we need to take is to start believing, regardless of where we are in our life, that it is possible to regain this beauty and mysterious feeling back again. I say it is mysterious because many have come and gone, but so far, no one has been able to give us a universal explanation of how this feeling works (ie., happiness and contentment). It is with this reason why I say: happiness is not a state of mind but rather, a state of being.Whether we choose to access it or not it will still be there to the point of our physical departure from earth life.

There are many in life who set goals for themselves continually, and even for the majority of the time, we find that achieving their goals in life ("i.e., goals set outside of the self") has not neccesarily brought contentment or lasting joy, because- for the most part- we move on to new desires. This in short proves that whatever joy we expect from our so- called goals in life are not lasting- they are all variables amenable to change.

Needless to mention, the goal of life, I know for certain, is not mine anyway. It (or "they" have been set long ago, before we came into physical existence, and they will be here- on earth- long after we have all departed from this present life.
