Abraham to sacrifice his son ISAAC
GENESIS Chapter 22
1 After these things, God tempted Abraham, and said to him: Abraham,
Abraham. And he answered: Here I am. 2 He said to him: Take thy only
begotten son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and go into the land of vision:
and there thou shalt offer him for a holocaust upon one of the mountains
which I will show thee. 3 So Abraham rising up in the night, saddled his
ass: and took with him two young men, and Isaac his son: and when he had
cut wood for the holocaust he went his way to the place which God had
commanded him. 4 And on the third day, lifting up his eyes, he saw the place afar
off. 5 And he said to his young men: Stay you here with the ass: I and
the boy will go with speed as far as yonder, and after we have
worshipped, will return to you. 6 And he took the wood for the
holocaust, and laid it upon Isaac his son: and he himself carried in his
hands fire and a sword. And as they two went on together, 7 Isaac said
to his father: My father. And he answered: What wilt thou, son? Behold,
saith he, fire and wood: where is the victim for the holocaust? 8 And
Abraham said: God will provide himself a victim for an holocaust, my
son. So they went on together. 9 And they came to the place which God
had shown him, where he built an altar, and laid the wood in order upon
it: and when he had bound Isaac his son, he laid him on the altar upon
the pile of wood.
10 And he put forth his hand and took the sword, to sacrifice his
son. 11 And behold an angel of the Lord from heaven called to him,
saying: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am. 12 And he said to
him: Lay not thy hand upon the boy, neither do thou any thing to him:
now I know that thou fearest God, and hast not spared thy only begotten
son for my sake. 13 Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw behind his back
a ram amongst the briers sticking fast by the horns, which he took and
offered for a holocaust instead of his son.
|

Vs:2 only begotten: precious, especially loved; therefore "Beloved"
Because of Abraham's faithfulness, God provides
him a (lamb) in this case a male (ram) to be sacrificed in place of Isaac,
Abraham's son. It is only a true sacrifice if the victim is of value to
the one who is offering it. The lamb is the sustenance of life to Abraham
and his family. Isaac, his son, was Abraham's first born, and was therefore his
glory.
Abraham was willing to offer his son and God does, more completely, the same. His Son
is offered for us and our salvation. |

Good Shepherd
JOHN CHAPTER 10.
Christ is the door and the good shepherd. He and his
Father are one.
6 This proverb
Jesus spoke to them. But they understood not what he spoke to them. 7
Jesus therefore said to them again: Amen, amen I say to you, I am the
door of the sheep. 8 All others, as many as have come, are
thieves and robbers: and the sheep heard them not. 9 I am the door. By
me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved: and he shall go in, and go
out, and shall find pastures. 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal,
and to kill, and to destroy. I am come that they may have life, and may
have it more abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd
giveth his life for his sheep. 12 But the hireling, and he that is not
the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and
leaveth the sheep, and flieth: and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the
sheep: 13 And the hireling flieth, because he is a hireling: and he hath
no care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know mine, and
mine know me.
15 As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father: and I lay down my
life for my sheep. 16 And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold:
them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be
one fold and one shepherd. 17 Therefore doth the Father love me: because
I lay down my life, that I may take it again. 18 No man taketh it away
from me: but I lay it down of myself, and I have power to lay it down:
and I have power to take it up again. This commandment have I received
of my Father.
|
 If
the lamb is the desired sacrifice, Jesus
places himself in the position of the shepherd, or the caretaker and
caregiver of all sacrifice. He gives his life for his sheep.
He will give his life as the ultimate sacrifice.
In this example we are
the sheep.
Vs:16 Other sheep, The gentiles, God's dispersed children destined
to be gathered into ONE flock. |

Passover Lamb
EXODUS Chapter 12
1 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: 2 This
month shall be to you the beginning of months: it shall be the first in
the months of the year. 3 Speak ye to the whole assembly of the children
of Israel, and say to them: On the tenth day of this month let every man
take a lamb by their families and houses. 4 But if the number be less
than may suffice to eat the lamb, he shall take unto him his neighbour
that joineth to his house, according to the number of souls which may be
enough to eat the lamb. 5 And it shall be a lamb without blemish, a
male, of one year: according to which rite also you shall take a kid. 6
And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month: and the
whole multitude of the children of Israel shall sacrifice it in the
evening. 7 And they shall take of the blood thereof, and put it upon
both the side posts, and on the upper door posts of the houses, wherein
they shall eat it. 8 And they shall eat the flesh that night roasted at
the fire, and unleavened bread with wild lettuce. 9 You shall not eat
thereof any thing raw, nor boiled in water, but only roasted at the
fire: you shall eat the head with the feet and entrails thereof. 10
Neither shall there remain any thing of it until morning. If there be
any thing left, you shall burn it with fire. 11 And thus you shall eat
it: you shall gird your reins, and you shall have shoes on your feet,
holding staves in your hands, and you shall eat in haste: for it is the
Phase (that is the Passage) of the Lord. 12 And I will pass through the
land of Egypt that night, and will kill every firstborn in the land of
Egypt both man and beast: and against all the gods of Egypt I will
execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 And the blood shall be unto you for
a sign in the houses where you shall be: and I shall see the blood, and
shall pass over you: and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy
you, when I shall strike the land of Egypt. 14 And this day shall be for
a memorial to you: and you shall keep it a feast to the Lord in your
generations with an everlasting observance. 15 Seven days shall you eat
unleavened bread: in the first day there shall be no leaven in your
houses: whosoever shall eat any thing leavened, from the first day until
the seventh day, that soul shall perish out of Israel. 16 The first day
shall be holy and solemn, and the seventh day shall be kept with the
like solemnity: you shall do no work in them, except those things that
belong to eating. 17 And you shall observe the feast of the unleavened
bread: for in this same day I will bring forth your army out of the land
of Egypt, and you shall keep this day in your generations by a perpetual
observance. 18 The first month, the fourteenth day of the month in the
evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day
of the same month in the evening. 19 Seven days there shall not be found
any leaven in your houses: he that shall eat leavened bread, his soul
shall perish out of the assembly of Israel, whether he be a stranger or
born in the land. 20 You shall not eat any thing leavened: in all your
habitations you shall eat unleavened bread. 21 And Moses called all the
ancients of the children of Israel, and said to them: Go take a lamb by
your families, and sacrifice the Phase. 22 And dip a bunch of hyssop in
the blood that is at the door, and sprinkle the transom of the door
therewith, and both the door cheeks: let none of you go out of the door
of his house till morning. 23 For the Lord will pass through striking
the Egyptians: and when he shall see the blood on the transom, and on
both the posts, he will pass over the door of the house, and not suffer
the destroyer to come into your houses and to hurt you. 24 Thou shalt
keep this thing as a law for thee and thy children for ever.
|
For each family, the LAMB became their
salvation. First the death of the lamb (a young male without
blemish) in sacrifice. The blood of the LAMB must be placed on the
door posts and the lentil of the houses of the Israelites, as a sign to
the Angel of Death that what was beyond that door was of value to God and
was to preserved. Notice that it was also necessary to eat the flesh
of the LAMB (the sacrifice). If the requirements of the sacrifice
and the meal were not kept, the first born of that house was killed
everywhere in the land of Egypt.
NOTE: The hyssop, the branch used to raise the sponge of wine to Jesus at the crucifiction
(The hyssop) washed the blood of the saving victim The Lamb, on the door posts for the salvation of
ISRAEL. (The hyssop) raised the wine of The 4th Cup (see PASSOVER Supper & Crucifiction) to the lips of Christ; then His blood will wash us clean when we partake of it in Communion. |

John the Baptist sees the Lamb of God
JOHN Chapter 1
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from
Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou? 20 And
he confessed, and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.
21 And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not.
Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No. 22 They said therefore unto
him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What
sayest thou of thyself? 23 He said: I am the voice of one crying out
in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the
prophet Isaias. 24 And they that were sent, were of the Pharisees. 25
And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou
be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet? 26 John answered them,
saying: I baptize with water; but there hath stood one in the midst of
you, whom you know not. 27 The same is he that shall come after me, who
is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to
loose. 28 These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where
John was baptizing. 29 The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him, and
he saith: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who taketh away the sin of
the world. 30 This is he, of whom I said: After me there cometh a man,
who is preferred before me: because he was before me. 31 And I knew him
not, but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come
baptizing with water. 32 And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the
Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven, and he remained upon him. 33
And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to
me: He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining
upon him, he it is that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34 And I saw, and
I gave testimony, that this is the Son of God. 35 The next day again
John stood, and two of his disciples. 36 And beholding Jesus walking, he
saith: Behold the Lamb of God. 37 And the two disciples heard him speak,
and they followed Jesus.
|
Vs:19 Jesus referrs to the Pharisees and the Sadducees; those hostle to the message of Christ
John points out the fact that Jesus is truly the
LAMB of God. Even though he may not have realized it at the time,
John identifies Jesus as the perfect victim who will be the ultimate
sacrifice to God for the sins of men.
Vs:29 The Lamb of God; for John perhaps the apocalyptic Lamb in
REV 17; or the Paschal Lamb - and/or - the "Suffering Servant" led like a lamb to the slaughter as an offering for sin (IS 53).

If you do not eat the bread of life, you have no life in you.
JOHN Chapter 6 :31 - 47 - 58
30 They said therefore to him: What sign therefore dost thou shew,
that we may see, and may believe thee? What dost thou work? 31 Our
fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them
bread from heaven to eat. 32 Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I
say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth
you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which
cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world. 34 They said
therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread. 35 And Jesus said
to them: I am the Bread of Life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger:
and he that believeth in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said unto you,
that you also have seen me, and you believe not. 37 All that the Father
giveth to me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me, I will not
cast out. 38 Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but
the will of him that sent me. 39 Now this is the will of the Father who
sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but
should raise it up again in the last day. 40 And this is the will of my
Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth in
him, may have life everlasting, and I will raise him up in the last day.
41 The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the
living bread which came down from heaven. 42 And they said: Is not this
Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then
saith he, I came down from heaven? 43 Jesus therefore answered, and said
to them: Murmur not among yourselves. 44
No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him;
and I will raise him up in the last day. 45 It is written in the
prophets: And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that
hath heard of the Father, and hath learned, cometh to me. 46 Not that
any man hath seen the Father; but he who is of God, he hath seen the
Father. 47 Amen, amen I say unto you: He that believeth in me, hath
everlasting life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers did eat
manna in the desert, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which cometh
down from heaven; that if any man eat of it, he may not die. 51 I am the
living bread which came down from heaven. 52 If any man eat of this
bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my
flesh, for the life of the world. 53 The Jews therefore strove among
themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 54
Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except
you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not
have life in you. 55 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood,
hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day. 56 For
my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. 57 He that eateth
my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him. As the
living Father hath sent me, and I have life because of the Father so the man who feeds on me will have life because of me. 58 This is the bread that came
down from heaven live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also
shall live by me.. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He
that eateth this bread, shall live for ever.
61 Many therefore of his disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is
hard, and who can hear it? 62 But Jesus, knowing in himself, that his
disciples murmured at this, said to them: Doth this scandalize you? 63
What if then you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was
before? 64 It is the spirit that
quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I have spoken to
you, are spirit and life. 65 But there are some of you that believe not.
For Jesus knew from the beginning, who they were that did not believe,
and who he was, that would betray him. 66 And he said: Therefore did I
say to you, that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my
Father. 67 After this many of his disciples went back; and walked no
more with him. 68 Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away?
69 And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast
the words of eternal life.

Manna gave sustenance to the Israelites during
their Exodus from Egypt. Notice, Egypt was the land of slavery (to
sin as well as to the Egyptians). Manna was only sustenance to the
body but their bodies die; Jesus is about to give them sustenance for
their souls and spirit that will live forever. As they sacrificed
and ate the LAMB in Egypt, Jesus will be their perfect sacrifice whom they
shall eat for everlasting salvation in Heaven. Yes, we shall eat the flesh
of the Son of Man and drink His blood and thereby gain life
everlasting. Jesus proclaims that he is the LAMB of God, the
Sacrificial LAMB. We must partake of the sacrifice just as the Israelites
had to eat the Lamb.
CHAP. 6.Ver. 54. Except you eat - and drink,
&c. To receive the body and blood of Christ, is a divine precept,
insinuated in this text; which the faithful fulfil, though they receive
but in one kind; because in one kind they receive both body and blood,
which cannot be separated from each other. Hence, life eternal is here
promised to the worthy receiving, though but in one kind. Ver. 52. If
any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I
will give, is my flesh for the life of the world.

The Last Supper
MATTHEW Chapter 26
17 And on the first day of the Azymes,(The Feast of Unleavened Bread), the disciples came
to Jesus, saying: Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the
pasch? 18 But Jesus said: Go ye into the city to a certain man, and say
to him: the master saith, My time is near at hand, with thee I make the
pasch with my disciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus appointed to
them, and they prepared the pasch. 20 But when it was evening, he sat
down with his twelve disciples. And whilst they were at supper, Jesus
took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said:
Take ye, and eat. This is my body. And taking the chalice, he gave
thanks, and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this. For this is my
blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission
of sins. And I say to you, I will not drink from henceforth of this
fruit of the vine, until that day when I shall drink it with you new in
the kingdom of my Father. 30 And a hymn being said, they went out unto
mount Olivet.
MATTHEW Chapter 27
33 And they came to the place that is called Golgotha,
which is the place of Calvary. 34 And they gave him wine to drink
mingled with gall. And when he had tasted, he would not drink. 35 And
after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots;
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They
divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
36 And they sat and watched him. 37 And they put over his head his cause
written: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38 Then were crucified with
him two thieves: one on the right hand, and one on the left. 39 And they
that passed by, blasphemed him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying: Vah,
thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days dost rebuild
it: save thy own self: if thou be the Son of God, come down from the
cross. 41 In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and
ancients, mocking, said: 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If
he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we
will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him now deliver him
if he will have him; for he said: I am the Son of God. 45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over
the whole earth, until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus
cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? that is, My
God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47 And some that stood there and
heard, said: This man calleth Elias.
JOHN Chapter 19
28 Afterwards, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said: I thirst.
29 Now there was a vessel set there full of vinegar. And they, putting a sponge full of vinegar and hyssop, put it to his mouth.
30 Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.
|
CHAP. 26. Ver. 26. This is my body. He
does not say, This is the figure of my body-but This is my body.
(2 Council of Nice, Act. 6.) Neither does he say in this, or
with this is my body; but absolutely, This is my body: which
plainly implies transubstantiation.
Ver. 27. Drink ye all of this. This was
spoken to the twelve apostles; who were the all then present; and they
all drank of it, says St. Mark 14. 23. But it no way follows from
these words spoken to the apostles, that all the faithful are here
commanded to drink of the chalice; any more than that all the faithful are
commanded to consecrate, offer and administer this sacrament; because
Christ upon this same occasion, and at the same time, bid the apostles do
so; in these words, St. Luke 22. 19, Do this for a commemoration of me.
Ver. 28. Blood of the new testament. As
the old testament was dedicated with the blood of victims, by Moses, in
these words: This is the blood of the testament, &c., Heb. 9.
20; so here is the dedication and institution of the new testament, in the
blood of Christ, here mystically shed by these words: This is the blood
of the new testament, &c.
Ver. 29. Fruit of the vine. These words,
by the account of St. Luke 22. 18, were not spoken of the sacramental cup,
but of the wine that was drunk with the paschal lamb. Though the
sacramental cup might also be called the fruit of the vine, because
it was consecrated from wine, and retains the likeness, and all the
accidents or qualities of wine.

Lamb standing as though It had been slain.
REVELATION Chapter 5
1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne,
a book written within and without, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw
a strong angel, proclaiming with a loud voice: Who is worthy to open the book,
and to loose the seals thereof? 3 And no man was able, neither in
heaven, nor on earth, nor under the earth, to open the book, nor to look on
it. 4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open the book,
nor to see it. 5 And one of the ancients said to me: Weep not; behold
the lion of the tribe of Juda, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the
book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. 6 And I saw: and behold in
the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of
the ancients, a Lamb standing as it were slain, having seven horns and seven
eyes: which are the seven Spirits of God, sent forth into all the earth.
7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat on the
throne. 8 And when he had opened the book, the four living creatures,
and the four and twenty ancients fell down before the Lamb, having every one
of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of
saints: 9 And they sung a new canticle, saying: Thou art worthy, O Lord,
to take the book, and to open the seals thereof; because thou wast slain, and
hast redeemed us to God, in thy blood, out of every tribe, and tongue, and
people, and nation. 10 And hast made us to our God a kingdom and
priests, and we shall reign on the earth. 11 And I beheld, and I heard
the voice of many angels round about the throne, and the living creatures, and
the ancients; and the number of them was thousands of thousands, 12
Saying with a loud voice: The Lamb that was slain is worthy to receive power,
and divinity, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and
benediction. 13 And every creature, which is in heaven, and on the
earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in
them: I heard all saying: To him that sitteth on the throne, and to the Lamb,
benediction, and honour, and glory, and power, for ever and ever. 14 And
the four living creatures said: Amen. And the four and twenty ancients fell
down on their faces, and adored him that liveth for ever and ever.

A Lamb standing as it were slain. Jesus
risen in glory is still slain for our salvation. Slain once for
all. We all worship and adore Him; in the Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God
of hosts, Heaven and Earth are filled with your Glory---etc. As the incense
rises in heaven the incense rises from our altars where we Remember and
join in the heavenly celebration of His victory over Satan and partake of
the gift of His Body and Blood offered for the remission of our sins.
