Censorship Introduction

The Internet allows a degree of anonymity, which causes many to express views and share ideas- without any sense of social conscience. This has led many people to seek to restrict the content that is allowed to be transmitted to minors. Many people believe that without government restrictions, the Internet poses a significant risk to the well being of the children of this country. Many websites have been made available to users of the Internet that involve adult materials, which is a more palatable term for pornography.

Although most agree that certain types of content available on the Internet should not be viewed by everyone who may use the internet, there is much controversy about weather or not it is legal to restrict the posting of pornographic or otherwise harmful information on the internet. There have been many attempts at censoring the internet, all of which have been met with strong opposition by many interest groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Human Rights Watch, and the Electronic Privacy Information Center (Kolbert 10).
