| This first paragraph is a disclaimer, of sorts. Some of the events described here were not done in the exact time frame that some of our friends think they were done. During the "process" of our relationship, I (nor Ray) never meant to hurt anyone intentionally. Anyone who has been in a relationship (whether short-term or long-term) knows the "dynamics" of attraction and desire, how unpredictable human emotions can be, and how those feelings can sometimes lead into something much deeper and lasting. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I was in my late 30s when I decided it was time to quit lying to myself and face some realities. After trying to maintain a "straight" facade for years, I needed to admit to myself that my attraction to men was NOT just a "phase" and that "the right woman" would take away any homosexual desires. If I wanted to find any semblance of happiness, I needed to live my life according to my own rules. I am VERY lucky in that "coming out" to my immediate family didn't cause any major problems. I think it caught most of them off guard a bit, but, with a little time, they all came to realize that I was the same person they had known for almost 40 years and my being gay had no effect on our family relationships. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I first discovered the "bear movement" about the same time as when I came out to myself. I knew most of the stereotypical "traits" of gay men and knew that I didn't fit into that category. While I despise all of the labeling, I identify most with bear groups and the men that associate with them. For some, the labels (bear, cub, wolf, otter, etc, etc, ad nauseum) seem to have more to do with inclusion/exclusion and my opinion is that there is FAR too much of that going on. Alot of the men I have met in the bear "community" are very down-to-earth guys without a lot of pretention and attitude. I much prefer that to head games and game playing. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I first met Ray right before Christmas 1997. In retrospect, I think that both of us felt that our first meeting was more than just an "ordinary" first date. We seemed to "click" on many levels. I had never felt so comfortable with someone (outside of my immediate family) in my life. At that point, I had dated a bit, I had been in a relationship (albeit, a short one), and wasn't really "looking" to find another one. But, as most of us know, we usually find things in the most unlikely of places (and at the most unlikely of times). Ray moved in several months later, and we have been together ever since. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Living with Ray has been a wonderful and fulfilling experience. But there has been some adjusting to do, on both our parts. He had been in 20 year marriage and I hadn't really lived with anyone before. Both of us are very committed to each other and are very committed to keeping communication lines open between us. We both feel that is a major key to making a relationship work. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
