Casey Stengel

Charles Dillon Stengel was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 30, 1890. In those days, ball players were occasionally known by the cities they came from, and so was Stengel called "KC" or Casey. Initially he tried to be a dentist, but when that failed he turned to baseball. Stengel was a wise man who uttered many a famous quote. Here are just a sampling of his opinions on life, baseball and the Clippers.

About the Clippers

"Last year was just not this year, this year we'll be better than last year and looking to future years."

"In any situation I can use my guy, this one or even the other one."

"Last season I would take a few innings off, hit the showers, get a massage, take a nap, and turn the team over to HAL. HAL just couldn't handle the pressure, so we've gotten rid of him. I resolve to coach every inning of every game this season, even if it means I'll have to skip my regular seventh inning snooze."

"My guys are like the African plains out there... At the bat they're lions, ferocius and killers. In the field they're like sick zebras; everything eats them up."

"They've shown me ways to lose I never knew existed."

About Baseball

"I was not successful as a ball player, as it was a game of skill."

"The secret of successful managing is to keep the five guys who hate you away from the four guys who haven't made up their minds."

"Good pitching will always stop good hitting and vice-versa."

"Most games are lost, not won."

"It ain't the water cooler that's getting you out." -Remarked to Gabe Kapler after striking out with the bases loaded

About Life

"They say you can't do it, but sometimes it doesn't always work."

"The trick is growing up without growing old."

"Without losers, where would the winners be?"

"There comes a time in every man's life and I've had many of them."
