Uttaranchal the Land of Celestial Beauty’ became the 27th state of the India Union on the 9th of Nov. 2000. The charming hilly state carved out of Utter Pradesh, comprises of two regions-Garhwal in the west and Kumaon in the east. Both the regions are endowed with awesome natural beauty and calm serenity of the majestic Himalayas. The state is studded with stunning snow covered peaks, glorious glaciers, alpine meadows, crystal clear lakes, holy rivers and exotic flora and fauna. When in Uttaranchal, it is quite easy to believe the legend that Lord Brahma, while creating the world reserved the best place for his fellow deities. Uttaranchal is also called as the Dev Bhoomi or the abode of the gods, as it is the land of great pilgrimages and has attracted pilgrims and seekers of spiritual fulfillment from world over since time immemorial. Pilgrimage to the sacred Char Dham- Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath is a dream for every devout Hindu. While the Sikhs consider Hemkund, Lokpal, Nanakmatta, Meetha Reetha Sahib and Piran Kaliyar very sacred. Ganda and Yamuna the two holiest rivers of Hindu mythology originate in the mountains of the State. The antiquity of the State is full of myths and legends as this is the land of gods and goddesses, celestial beings and sages, fables and folklores. Uttaranchal finds mention in ancient Hindu scriptures as Kedarkhand, Manaskhand and Himavant. The Kushanas, Kunindas, Kanishka, Samudra Gupta, Pauravas, Katuris, Palas, Chandra and Pawaras and British reigned here in turns. The present state of Uttaranchal was earlier a part of the United Province of Agra and Awadh which came into existence in 1902 and later came to be known as Uttar Pradesh. After independence hilly region of Uttar Pradesh aspired to have a separate state. After a long and determined struggle the dream of Uttaranchal was finally achieved.

The Tons, largest tributary of the Yamuna, has some magical spots in it's upper reaches. Forests of Alder and Blue pine lead to the famous Har-ki-Dun catchment area, source of another tributary, the Rupin. Har-ki-Dun is a spectacular valley high up, an amphitheatre ringed on three sides by spurs of the Great Himalaya. A wonderland with vast grassy alps that inspire a sense of solitude that only the high Himalaya can inspire. The Rupin makes a spectacular precipitous descent through a narrow valley
