The Cherokee Rose is the state flower here in Ravens home of Georgia.
Here is how it was told that the flower came to be.
Around May 1836 the US Army commanded by General Winfield Scott arrived in New Echota, in north Georgia and began the invasion of the Cherokee Nation, forcing the Cherokees to be removed from their homes in Georgia and being moved to Oklahoma. The journey was long and harsh, about 4000 Cherokee died along the way. It is known as the TRAIL OF TEARS.
Legend says that the women grieved so much from being driven from their homes, the elders of the tribe asked the Great Spirit, to give them a sign for strength to care for the children, so the women could continue the journey. The next day wherever a mother's tear fell to the ground, a beautiful white rose grew. It has a gold center for the gold taken from the Cherokee land and seven leaves on each stem for the seven clans that made the journey. To this day all along the route you will find the Cherokee Rose.
