About Raven

RavenI was born under the Ducks Fly Moon and am a member of the Butterfly Clan.
I found my way thru the sacred circle and fly with each mornings sunrise.
I can transform myself to be many things as each days journey begins.
Come fly with me, open your mind and I can show you the secret of the rock.
Mudjekeewis, The Spirit Keeper of the West, guides me through the circle of life and determines which of the 4 paths I take to honor the Great Creator. I speak the language of all animals. When you dream I will come to and give you messages from the the spirit world. I ride the winds with my friend Red Hawk in the mountains of North Georgia. I walk in the footsteps of the Creek Confederacy that lived on the land long ago. Their spirits call to me as I begin my journey.

I am RAVEN.

Why is Raven Black? The Legend Tells Us

In the beginning of the world, Grey Eagle was the guardian of the sun, moon, stars, fresh water and fire. Grey Eagle hated people so he kept these things hidden. The people lived without light, fire and fresh water.

Grey Eagle had a very beautiful daughter and Raven fell in love with her. Raven was a man so he changed himself into a snow-white bird. As a snow-white bird he pleased Grey Eagles daughter. She invited him to their lodge.

When Raven saw the sun, moon ,stars and fresh water hidden inside Grey Eagles lodge, he knew what he must do. He waited for his chance to grab them when no one was watching. He stole them all and a hot coal of fire. He flew from the lodge through the smoke hole.

As soon as Raven was outside, he hung the sun up in the sky. It made light. When the sun set Raven fastened the moon up in the sky. He hung the stars around the moon. By the new light Raven could see to fly and carried the fresh water and a hot coal from the fire.

As Raven flew over the land, he dropped the water in certain places. It fell to the ground and became the source of all fresh water streams and lakes in the world.

Then Raven flew on, still holding the hot coal in his beak. The smoke from the hot coal blew back on his white feathers and made them black. When his beak became too hot he had to drop the hot coal. It struck the rocks and went into the rocks. That is why when you strike two rocks together fire will spark.

Raven's feathers never became white again after they turned black from the smoke. That is why Raven is black.
