Artist Statement

1. Tosca Poster: In 1997 the San Francisco Opera held a design contest for posters to promote their production of Tosca.  As with most operas, Tosca is full of death, blood, love, passion, and most other base human emotions. To make my poster distinct, I found images of Puccinis hand-written score, and used that as a background. The immediate visual impact of the knife pointing down towards the blood-red title replaced the need for textual communication.

2.
Untitled-red: Created from Mokuhanga (Japanese-style woodblock printmaking), I created this design using 4 blocks, each block a different color. Mokuhanga uses transparent, water-based inks, hence overlapping block colors can create more colors on paper than are spread on the blocks, as in this case.

Renee is a graphic designer and artist based in San Francisco. After focusing purely on a graphic design career for a too-long 7 years, and in response to harsh world events, she decided to leave the corporate world in early 2003. She now focuses on painting, and on doing graphic work for small, non-corporate clients. She is much happier for it.
