If someone asks
what the mission of Raven
Magazine is, I say: to support writers & artists in their
creative endeavors. They often find such a concept too to the
point and inquire about the type of work Raven is
interested in specifically, to which I answer: Raven believes in
freedom of speech and expression, and actively seeks work that is
thought provoking; experimental pieces are encouraged as is mixed
media. Censorship is kept to a minimum.
Still not
satisfied, they ask what Raven's target audience is--I reply with:
Writers & artists and the non-writers & artists who love them,
Specifically (though not exclusively) those who are in their early
20s to late 30s, more specifically women, people of color and
members of the LGBT community
(lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender for those who don't know).
Upon hearing this,
some people associate Raven with words like: "leftist," "lesbian,"
"radical," "amateur," not mainstream enough, like
Poets&Writers, for instance. FYI: This is not Poets&Writers,
this is Raven and we are Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, we are
hetero and homosexuals, we are twenty-six
and sixty-two, we are novices and professionals, poor,
not-so-poor, disabled, unemployed, students, instructors,
Christians, Atheists and practicing witches, who all have in
common a love of art and the written word, regardless of genre or
medium.
Raven Magazine is
a one-woman operation, meaning one woman gathered submissions from
twenty writers and artists for the first issue, and over the
course of the summer, learned to create a website (consisting of
over twenty webpages) to serve as a platform for our words and
images.
I
encourage and appreciate feedback of any kind; please E-mail
all comments and questions to
[email protected].
All this having been said...
Welcome to Raven Magazine!
Sincerely,
Amber Stewart
