The Dark and Bloody Ground
Episode Eight:
What in the world is a Bayraven Gorilla?
Astrid's roomies tell her that her mom, called and that they've discovered her deep secret - her middle name, Octavia! They also ask about her boyfriend . . .Josh. Astrid, somewhat nervously, explains that Josh is just a friend. After the roomies leave, she returns the call from her mom.   Abby wants to know what Astrid's plans are about the upcoming holidays. Astrid tells her she'll try for Christmas, but doesn't think she'll be able to make it for Thanksgiving.
Josh has his nemesis nightmare again. This time the demon is able to see through his eyes for several minutes before the link is severed. Fortunantly nothing to give away his location was seen.
The gang finish up their mid-terms. Although most of the group do fairly well, they start to realize that fighting the forces of Evil hurts the GPA.
Later that day, Stephanie is at work when all the officers are called into the squad room for a briefing. A fifth murder matching the M.O. of the Serial Killer has occured. All Murfreesboro detectives have been placed at Homicides disposal. Detective Nick Devry has taken over the case. After the meeting the Captain asks Steph to see him in his office. Ihe Captain seems nervous and concerned. He's been ordered to drop any case or inquiries into the recent death of Prof. Wingate of M.T.S.U. and the kidnapping of Breanna Carwell. Not willing to let the matter drop, the Captain has surreptitiously used his contacts to find out information. What little he has discovered  has lead him to believe terrorists have been at work in his town. At this point, he decides to trust Stephanie with his career - and maybe his life - by asking her straight out if his town is in danger. She honestly answers that to her knowledge there are no terrorists in the Boro - she avoids mentioning that his town is in a lot of danger due to an influx of evil creatures. The Captain accepts her answer and is visably relieved. He informs Stephanie that, as the serial killer case is top priority, he's a little short handed on the detective front and offers her a small case - a test case as it were.
Astrid, Josh, and Leroy head to the archaeological dig for a little extra credit work - which Leroy desperately needs. The framework object found buried earlier is being removed. Prof Mills arrives with exciting news. M.T.S.U has received permission to house the find on campus. And Astrid, Josh, Leroy are to be honored with their names on the dedication plaque - along with Prof. Mills.
Breanna, having had about as much mollycoddling as she can stand, decides to get back into her journalistic and scholastic life. Hearing of a Halloween party to be held at an abandoned and supposedly haunted dormitory, Breanna investigates.
The gang plan to meet for dinner after exams.  Astrid, Josh and Leroy are met by Stephanie at the restaraunt. She says she can't stay and she needs Leroy's help on the case she's been assigned. As they leave, Breanna calls and claims she has a deadline to meet and also won't be able to make it for dinner - leaving Josh and Astrid together. During the dinner, Josh mentions that he's having a good time and wonders if Astrid would like to go out again, when they're not gonna have to go looking for monsters afterwards. He even buys her a rose. She excepts and to fill any uncomfortable silence she mentions the Haunted party at Abernathy Dorm. Josh agrees that a costume party would be a good place to go with Astrid - to patrol of course!
Stephanie fills Leroy in on her case. Two hunters outside of town were found dead and gutted, possibly by a bear or other powerful wild animal. The Sheriffs Department is required to bring in a detective to check out the scene and make the call if it was a murder or not. Stephanie decided to bring along Leroy because he is a zoology major and just in case she runs across a bear - or other dangerous creature. Arriving at the scene, Steph meets the deputy and is shown the scene, two bodies with no innards - and two shotguns wrapped around a tree branch. The deputy had requested some hunting dogs, but they seem reluctant to enter the woods any further. The dogs owner, a backwoodsman, tells Steph that what killed the two hunters was a BayRaven Gorilla! The Deputy rolls her eyes and says
"Yeah, and my ?Mexican grandfather would have called it El Chupacabra." Leroy befriends one of the hunting beagles and coaxes it into hunting whatever is out there. Turns out the woodsman was right (and maybe Grandpa). They eventually find it. . .or rather it finds them. The creature, a squat, powerful ball of muscle attacks Leroy. Steph is able to shot it a couple of times, but the creature runs off. Stephanie takes off after it, but Leroy is able to bring her up quick by yelling "Babies". Seems as though the creature is a mother. Leroy thinks she's defending a litter. Steph decides to call the rest of the gang in for back-up.
Meanwhile, the gang is having all kinds of fun on their own. Someone has summoned some demons at the party. Working together, and with some help from an admirer of Breanna's the gang is able to dispatch three demons - without Leroys help.
Getting the call from Steph, the gang head into the woods. There they meet up with not only Steph and Leroy, but Jim Panahoc and Sam Davis also. Jim and Sam have been hunting for the Ewah - as Jim calls it. Calling Steph "Little Raven" he asks for her help in magically teleporting the Ewah and cubs to their home in the Appalachians. Willing to accept a little on faith, she accepts and after Jim is able to knock the beast out, they start chanting. To her surprise, Steph is able to join in almost immediatly and the Ewah and cubs disappear into rising fog.
