Is
Justice Blind?
Randy Arroyo Baez is a prisoner/activist incarcerated on the Texas Death
Row. Wrongly convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death at the age
of 17, he has decided that his voice will not be buried beneath the pile
of bodies that Texas is stacking up at the death chambers in Huntsville!
This site conveys the visions of Randy and acts as a potent forum for his
political and social views. At twenty-four years of age, Randy is not a
simple or shallow young man rather a self-educated visionary who has not
lost his sense of humanity nor his beliefs that he once carried as a free
man. Mentally and spiritually, he's no less free. In fact, he is even more
emancipated as his struggles on Texas Death Row has made him dig deep to
find a profound state of being that he never knew existed.
The structure of this site has been made to encompass the many facts of
this young man, for his school of thought thrives on many planes of life.
Randy is a Puerto Rican nationalist, and even before coming to death row
he was active in educating young Puerto Ricans here in the United States
about their cultural identity and struggle. Gifted and talented in the
lyrical field, he paints poetic pictures for us that proudly reveal his
connection to his roots. "His realization to the
connection of operation ranging from capital punishment to cultural
pillage is one that he is not hesitant in exposing."
He makes this reality a world for us all to experience.
Although not limited to the controversy of the execution of juveniles, it
is probably Randy's most fervent issue as it lingers over his head like a
flipping coin, waiting for the conclusion of our Supreme Court as to
whether or not this immoral practice will be outlawed. Submerged in the
study of this vile scheme, Randy enlightens the public not only to the
statistics of juvenile executions, but also to the science of the brain
development of children. He most passionately reveals what it has been
like for a seventeen-year-old to grow up on the death row that has come to
be known internationally as The Killing Machine!
Unified in the activities of fellow prisoners, Randy brings the messages
of other prisoners to the forefront. He shines light on the path for
society to follow to become a more conscious group of citizens. Is justice
blind? Randy believes so as he has apparently witnessed her eyes being
gouged out. "In the spirit of Marquis de
Lafayette, Randy protests, "Until the
infallibility of human judgment shall have been proved to me, I shall
persist in demanding the abolition of the death penalty."
Randy is an artist, and through his self-established group,
Everlasting Art, he (and other invited prisoners) demonstrate through
community shows that the power to touch hearts comes from within and
should not be hindered, no matter what the circumstances.
There is a lot to be heard from this young man; this barely breaks the
ice. We hope you will take some time to view this site,
and through that, most likely any preconceived stigmas about a
death row prisoner will be abolished. Abolished?! That is what Randy and
his supporters want: the abolition of not only the death penalty,
but of political and social injustice. Knowing that one person with
courage can influence the majority, he (and all of us behind him) hope
that a mind and heart can be touched enough to join us in our plight. In
the words of Richard Dieter:
"The Death Penalty is parading through the
streets of America as if it were clothed in the finest robes of criminal
justice. Most politicians applaud its finery; others stare in silence
,too timid to proclaim that the emperor has no clothes. Instead of
confronting the twin crises of the economy and violence, politicians offer
the death penalty as if it were a meaningful solution to crime. At the
same time, more effective and vital services to the community are being
sacrificed. Voters should be told the truth about the Death Penalty. They
should understand that there are programs that do work in reducing crime,
but the resources to pay for such programs are being diverted in to show
executions. Being sensible about crime is not being soft on crime."
Too much is at stake to allow political manipulation to silence the truth
about the death penalty in America."
