Ultimatly, the Klingon Empire can be blamed for
igniting war with the Dominion. In 2371, they planned to
conquer the Cardassian Union and launched an all out invasion,
finally backing down after a brief period of conflict with the
Federation.

While the Cardassians were picking up the pieces,
they were secretly betrayed by their leader, Gul Dukat, when he
entered into an Alliance with the Dominion. For three years
Dominion ships poured through the wormhole while the Federation
fortified Deep Space Nine and made preparations for an all out
invasion. In 2374, the reality of a war was hard to
ignore. The Dominion was busily securing non-agression pacts
with various Alpha Quadrant powers, most notebly the Romulans.
Finally, Starfleet ordered the wormhole closed and Deep Space Nine
personnel began laying a minefield at it's mouth.
With the new weapons array fully operational, and
it's devistating capabilities well known after the Klingon attack,
Starfleet Command was hoping to provoke the Dominion into committing
a large armada from their nearest base. Starfleet analysts
predicted it would cost the Dominion dearly, and even if they did
gain control of DS9, it would be a phyrric victory since the
minefield operated independent of the station and would require
considerable time to dismantle.
While the Dominion was occupied at DS9, a
Federation/Klingon fleet would head into Dominion Space and
completly destroy the Dominion Starship Yards at Taurus III.
With the yards destroyed, sustaining minimal losses if at all, the
fleet would head back to DS9 and finish off the Dominion Invasion
Force, recapturing the station if need be.
The first predictions came true. Work on the
minefield progressed slowly when the Dominion Military Advisor
Weyounn came aboard the station and delivered an ultimatum to
Captain Sisko: Halt minelaying and dismantle the existing minefield
or face an all-out Dominion Invasion. Starfleet provoked the
Dominion sure enough and an invasion force was sent to DS9.

Weyounn delivered his ultimatum one final time and
when Captain Sisko refused to back down, life as the Federation knew
it changed forever..............

a new, bloody saga was in the making. War
was on...........

The Defiant retreats from the station, escorted by
Klingon General Martok aboard the B'Rel class Rotarran.............

and meets up with the Federation/Klingon Fleet en
route to Taurus III. The Allies succeeded in obiliterating
Dominion installations in the area, but most of this fleet was lost
when they tried to re-take DS9.
