The Federation's first encounter with the Dominion in 2371 was
anything but peaceful. Following the capture of DS9 Commander
Benjamin Sisko on a Gamma Quadrant world , the Galaxy Class
USS Odyssey along with DS9's 2 remaining runnabouts proceeded
through the wormhole on a rescue mission. The rescue party came upon
Sisko's runnabout and were met by a trio of Jem'Hadar Attack
Ships. From the start, the fight was hopeless. The 3
scarab shaped warships were armed with powerful phased poloron
weapons which punched straight through Federation Shielding.
The Odyssey suffered several hits to her port nacelle in rapid
succession, while the Runnabout Mekong suffered almost equal
damage. After the rescue of Sisko, the Runnabouts regrouped
and escorted the Odyssey back towards the wormhole when one of the
Jem'Hadar ships broke formation and made a suicide run on the Galaxy
class ship, which exploded not long afterwords. After
returning to DS9, Sisko learned that the entire event was a ploy by
the Dominion to plant a spy within Starfleet.

The Odyssey arrives with Runnabouts Mekong,
Orinoco and Ganges.........

......and is met by the Jem'Hadar.

The Runnabouts attempting to draw the Jem'Hadar
away from the Odyssey. Here, the Orinoco opens fire, supported
by the Mekong.

The Jem'Hadar overpower the Runnabouts and open up
on the Odyssey, with the Odyssey returning fire.

As the Odyssey and the Runnabouts were retreating
back towards the wormhole, a Jem'Hadar ship rammed the Odyssey's
Secondary Hull...........

which resulted in a catastrophic explosion.
Three months after the disasterous first contact,
Commander Benjamin Sisko lobbied Starfleet Command for personnel and
supplies to fortify Deep Space Nine. They replied by promoting
Sisko to Captain and giving him command of the experimental warship Defiant.

In addition, they rearmed Deep Space Nine with
more than 5000 Photon Torpedos..........

and powerful Type XII Phaser Banks.
