1. RAMS NOTES

* The Rams would probably be willing to sign Warner to a deal similar to Green's. But would the agent accept it, giving up the possibility of huge bucks in a couple of years.

* A Rams source told me today [March 25] there is "zero chance" that the rumored signing of Corey Dillon and trade to the Browns would happen. When told the story keeps surfacing, the source said, "It's probably recurring because of his agent. We wouldn't do that to Mike Brown."

* Also, on Friday [March 24], the Rams placed OT Todd Frohbieter on waivers. It seemed odd considering how often Armey talked about him in the off-season. I will try and get an explanation from Armey soon. The Rams also waived CB Joe Rowe and DE Glenn Young. They were carried all season on reserve/non-football injury after being hurt last spring in NFL Europe.

The decision to cut Frohbieter was made by Martz, who didn't feel he was making enough progress in rehab and on the field to be counted on for a roster spot this season. Armey still likes him, and was surprised by Martz's decision.

Now, I hope people don't read too much into this "disagreement." It happens all the time between coaches and the personnel department and they co-exist.Having said that, I hope Martz isn't being too quick to dismiss certain guys without a real chance.

Of course, the stakes are now higher. This is not a team now hoping to win; it is a team expected to win. And Martz is on the hot seat. He has to feel comfortable that his backup tackle, for example, is someone who can play if he has to.

* Willie Jones, the tackle placed on waivers by the Rams in February and claimed by Seattle and Miami (awarded to Seattle) was declared a free agent Wednesday. Seems the Rams weren't able to place him on waivers because he wasn't under contract and had been tendered as an exclusive rights free agent in the days before free agency started Feb. 11. An arbitrator ruled the Rams should have simply rescinded the tender, making Jones a total free agent. His agent filed the grievance because he knew two teams claimed Jones and figured he could get a signing bonus.

* Martz was at the workout [March 21] of Trung Canidate and worked him out personally.

* The NFL regular season schedule will be released the week of April 10, probably early in the week. The Rams uniforms will also be unveiled that week.

* Rams Preseason schedule:

Aug. 5 (probably) Oakland

Aug. 14 at Tennessee (ABC-TV)

Aug. 19 (probably) Buffalo

Aug. 24 at Dallas (ESPN)

"Probably" is because dates are not final yet.

2. Q & A

QUESTION: [From Rabid]: I just don't get the Carpenter & Morton moves. Maybe they're trying to let them get a chance to start somewhere else. Is the difference between minimum for a 1 year vet vs a 2-3 year vet that much of a cap savings?

HOWARD: It doesn't seem like much, but the difference between a rookie minimum and veteran minimum is $250,000. Multiply that by two or three guys, and you have $500,000 to $750,000 more in the cap.
