Can a helmet hide a tear ? No..and for the best reasons

schick.jpg (4297 bytes)I stare out at the field from the southwest tunnel. I look at the ground and imagine what it must have been like to trample out of this tunnel in that 1951 championship game. So magnificent,..so infinite. I am walked to the peristyle endzone steps by my Father.  He walks with my hand in his hand. It's 1985 and I am but 5 years old at the time, and I admire this strong man for being so much a Daddy. He lets me wear his helmet that he brought along with us, which dangles and spins everytime I take a step.

We sit on the steps underneath the  Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Grand peristyle arches. My Dad tells me of the time  he and chiefs coach Hank Stram joked endlessly during a pre-game warm-up at this glorious stadium. It was in the 1966 season. (My Dad still holds his uniform in a case along with his Los Angeles Rams helmet at my parents estate in Beverly hills this very day). As we sit and talk, I begin to tear up. My dad asks me why, and I reply " Cuz I am soo glad God gave me a wonderful family to grow up in."  He wiped my tear away and said "my little sweetheart, one day you'll see your little brother play in a stadium just like this ; and you'll remember why I brought you here today....it is your family birth right to be a Rams legacy. That is why I played the game, so you can have all the things in life I couldn't have as a kid. Now smile big for daddy."

......I sit and reflect back to that day everytime I place my fingers to the keys to bring my words into your lives. That is how I grew up in a Los Angeles Rams family. I pour my heart out because I breathe it. I now try and be humble...and I think I achieve it. I rarely ever talk to anyone about my experiences in an NFL family though and when I do...I just sit back and watch their reaction, I realize it is quite a moment. Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,
Chazzz

Publishers note-

It is truley amazing that a young lady like Chazz can be such a loyal Rams fan.  She has a knowledge of the history of our beloved team which rivals that of the old timers at nflfans.com.  Even though her writings create some unjustified heat, she can create a vivid picture in your mind of a game that was played 20 years ago with just a paragraph or two.   Thanks for the memories, Chazz,  and keep on posting!!
